This is the tweet that I thought was interesting. Carl said it was “very odd” that I thought it was interesting.
You and he may not have noticed, but this year we have had the biggest energy energy/fertiliser shock in the last 80 years.
New Zealand relies heavily on imported urea (which is made from natural gas).
The United States is by far the world’s largest producer of both oil and natural gas
This tweet shows prices are back to pre-war levels in the United States, and have shown sharp declines in Europe and Latin America (but remain elevated in most of Asia).
That is highly relevant information for New Zealand as an importer of urea which is critical for our food producers who underpin much of our economy - and our ability to grow food for kiwis.
It is very odd that someone who burnishes their online credentials as someone with some gravitas when commenting on international affairs as they relate to New Zealand (because of his former diplomatic roles) would think this information was not only irrelevant - but that it was “very odd” that a New Zealand lawmaker was looking at it.
It makes me wonder what kind of advice he gave the New Zealand government of his day when he was working in his offical capacity.
