The ancient County of #Cumberland is a claw-shaped shire commanding the mountains of the #LakeDistrict to the coast, stretching along the coast of the Solway Firth and the Irish Sea.

The @ONS explicitly recommend them as such.

Far easier to describe geographical locations by use of geography, rather than admin zones, which frequently change.

Perhaps @OrdnanceSurvey could follow this lead? 🤔

Derwentwater is the widest of the lakes in Cumberland.

Overlooked by the mighty Skiddaw and with the bustling market town of Keswick on its northern shore, it is a popular choice with visitors.

Blencathra, also known as Saddleback, is one of the most northerly fells in the Lake District.

It has six separate fell tops, of which the highest is the 2,848-foot (868m) Hallsfell Top.

Millom is a town on the estuary of the River Duddon in the southernmost point of Cumberland.

The name #Millom was in use before the Norman Conquest for the lands known as Millom and the name is assumed to be of Norse origin.

Scafell Pike is the highest mountain in Cumberland and the highest in all England, rising to 3,209 feet (978m).

It is part of the Scafell massif and is within the #LakeDistrict National Park.

It is one of the Southern Fells in Wainwright's classification.

Skiddaw is a mountain in the #LakeDistrict National Park.

Its 3,054 ft (931m) summit is traditionally considered to be the fourth-highest peak.

It lies just north of the town of Keswick and dominates the skyline in this part of the northern lakes.

In 1276 Edward I granted #Keswick its market charter, and it continues to this day.

The general market stands every Saturday and Thursday, except in high winds.

In the centre of the Market Square is the Moot Hall, now home to the Tourist Information Centre.

Standing proud in the city it has dominated for nine centuries, Carlisle Castle remained a working fortress until well within living memory.

It has withstood many sieges, held captive a royal prisoner, and been home to the King’s Own Royal Border Regiment.

Celebrated each year on 24 September, the date of the baptism of renowned #Cumberland figure, John Peel.

Born at Park End, near Caldbeck, in 1776 or 1777, Peel was a figure of local renown celebrated in a popular song.

Buttermere is a lake in #Cumberland, one of the famous waters of the #LakeDistrict.

The adjacent village of #Buttermere takes its name from the lake.

The lake and shore are owned by the @NationalTrust.

Stretching out below the dramatic headland of St Bees Head is a mile long sand and pebble beach.

Stretching from South Head to Seamill Lane, #StBees beach consists of a shingle bank which slopes down to an expanse of golden sand.

The Cumberland flag was registered in 2012.

The Parnassus flower is a wild flower of the marshy uplands and was chosen as the county flower of #Cumberland, growing here on a green field.

The wavy blue and white stripes represent the coastline and the famed lakes of the county.

The county's bounds lie along the Irish Sea coast, Solway and Liddesdale to the north and along the Pennines and Lakeland Fells.

This #BoerWar memorial is located in a prominent and elevated position within Castle Park, where it forms a focal point.

The memorial was unveiled at its original location outside #Penrith Town Hall in a ceremony on 1 March 1906.

It was subsequently moved in 1964.
