Lots of takes on the Dort/Presti/Ownership situation…Like I said last night on my show, what Presti said is irrelevant. Seems to me like ownership said just blame it on us. Presti doesn’t want the impression with players of a GM that’s not willing to go into 2nd Apron. But the truth is, if OKC was “comfortable going into the 2nd Apron with this year’s team” then OKC wouldn’t have traded Joe and Wiggins before Dort.
OKC had to trade Dort to stay under the 2nd Apron this year because they will almost certainly go into it two and three years from now when Shai is making $60+ & Dub and Chet are making $44. And the third year in the 2nd Apron is when the harsh penalties kick in.
Also, maybe more importantly, if they would’ve kept Dort and started Dort, you risk pissing off and losing Cason Wallace. This move secures the future of Wallace.
Presti is the one whose hands would be tied if OKC wasted an Apron year this upcoming season. This was a formality and the only move for Presti, but wants to save a relationship with a long time core Thunder player in Dort publicly, and make sure it looks like he did everything he could to keep him.
Ultimately this is a great move for the Thunder that extends their Championship window, while still having a real chance to win the Finals this upcoming season.
Only way this is not a complete overstatement is if Wallace and Mitchell turned out to be total busts in their increased mins, any current or future draft picks at the position are busts and in the unlikely event that those things happen Presti is unable to save it via trade OR Shai is still pissed about it in 2029. +-0.05% chance
