Man Killed in Officer-Involved Shooting in Colorado Springs

Facts:
Colorado Springs Police Officers responded to a disturbance in the 100 block of East Pikes Peak Avenue around 1:30 a.m. for an individual displaying a firearm near closing time of downtown nightclubs, but initially cleared the call.

Around 1:49 a.m., officers monitoring surveillance cameras spotted a man matching the suspect’s description who appeared armed; as they approached, he turned, ran, and reached toward his waistband, prompting one officer to discharge their weapon, striking him.

The suspect, identified by the El Paso County Coroner’s Office as 26-year-old Alex Martinez-Sarmiento, was taken into custody, with officers beginning life-saving measures, but he was pronounced dead on scene.

A firearm was recovered at the scene; no officers were injured.

The involved officer has been placed on paid administrative leave per policy.

The El Paso County Sheriff’s Office is leading the investigation as required by Colorado law; no criminality has been determined, and the investigation remains ongoing.
