There are other things the republicans are against (certain books in schools, some LGBT issues), feels more like each side agrees with their freedoms and not the other side's freedoms.

@mattyglesias I assume he's trying to save face at this moment, and this could blow up spectacularly if he's in the running and loses, but on the other hand, if he's truly convinced he's the best one for the job and would win, he should be open to this idea.
