🤔 … let’s talk about the @Conservative_BC promise of “Compassionate Intervention” (forced treatment), instead of continuing to scale up VOLUNTARY treatment for people who actually want it.

WHICH I’M 100% IN FAVOUR OF BTW‼️

👉 Forced treatment is the MOST EXPENSIVE and the LEAST SUCCESSFUL element in a comprehensive system of addictions care 👈 Every province in Canada and U.S. state is currently scaling up VOLUNTARY treatment programs and options, but with the current composition of the illicit drug supply … it’s hard to do.

What are the challenges?
1. STAFFING. We have a shortage of health care workers, including addictions specialists, nurses, psychologists, psychiatrists.
2. The incredibly potent shitmix in the illicit drug supply means many people need 24-hour medically supervised detox to prevent death. That requires … STAFFING.
3. Given the current state of the illicit drug supply, limited-term residential treatment programs (that dump people back into the same bad situation they left) are not the best option for everyone. For some people, longer-term supports in the community are a better option. Those need STAFFING.
4. Conservatives say they’ll build “Low Secure Units” for forced treatment. So as well as the doctors, nurses, counselors, psychologists & psychiatrists needed for these facilities, we’ll need to hire GUARDS? So more STAFFING.

Also, let’s be honest here. THAT’S JAIL 👆

What happens if someone walks away from a “low secure unit”? Is a warrant issued for their arrest & return to “treatment”?

Who would be responsible for the death of someone who left treatment — the staff at the facility?

YOU CAN’T CRIMINALIZE A HEALTH ISSUE, AND EXPECT PEOPLE TO GET BETTER!

This election promise is really not about recovery. It’s about hiding the problem behind locked doors. But it won’t even do that… and it’s going to be expensive just to try.
