The history of Eritrea: those who do not remember the past are doomed to repeat it. Understanding history is essential for comprehending the present. On March 19, 1984, the EPLF) launched an offensive against the Wuqaw Command, which was stationed in the northeastern Sahel region. This surprise attack overwhelmed the Ethiopian army, forcing them to retreat toward the Red Sea. The Ethiopian forces were decisively defeated, with the Derg losing 7,000 soldiers in the Sahel plains. Following this significant victory, the famous song "Awget," composed by the Eritrean artist Wedi Tkul, was created. Awget served as the headquarters for the Ethiopian army on the northeastern front in the Sahel. #DiscoverEritrea2025.
