The Hyatt Regency San Francisco, completed in 1973 and located at the foot of Market Street and The Embarcadero, stands as a landmark of modernist and brutalist architecture in the city’s financial district. Designed by John Calvin Portman as part of the larger Embarcadero Center project, the 17-story hotel spans a gross area of over 837,000 square feet and is known for its dramatic atrium, the largest hotel lobby in the world, according to Guinness World Records. Measuring 107 meters long, 49 meters wide, and 52 meters tall, the atrium exemplifies Portman’s pioneering use of interior urban space. The project was realized with the support of Trammell Crow and David Rockefeller, with construction led by Portman himself.
Designed by architect Sachio Otani (completed in 1966)
