What if the Yellow Vests were right, and your vote is a trap?
In 2018, France’s working class did something Americans are terrified to do: they ignored the ballot box and took the streets. For two years. Every Saturday.
Anthropologist Ida Susser (CUNY) joins Macro N Cheese TONIGHT to talk about her open-access book, Yellow Vests and the Battle for Democracy.
Three quick takeaways from the episode:
1️⃣ They didn't want a leader. The Yellow Vests actively rejected top-down cults of personality (unlike MAGA). Their identity was the yellow vest — a symbol of state protection turned upside down.
2️⃣ They started with diesel taxes; a poor person’s fuel. and ended up fighting for healthcare, pensions, and the literal survival of the French welfare state.
3️⃣ They changed the math. After the movement, Macron couldn’t pass his budget. A left coalition (New Popular Front) won parliament. Grassroots resistance works — but only if you’re willing to block traffic.
🎙️ TONIGHT’S LIVE DISCUSSION
We’re not just summarizing. We’re asking: Could this happen in the U.S.? And what would stop us?

This is a really striking paper. It shows that vehicles "Made in Germany" are mostly not made in Germany at all.
Only 46% of the labour that goes into producing "Made in Germany" vehicles occurs in Germany. The majority of the labour is performed elsewhere (with wages as low as one-fifth the level), and the majority of the emissions occur elsewhere, but the value is disproportionately captured in Germany.
The paper was led by our colleague Laura Pérez-Sánchez at ICTA.

Some Yellow Vests had never been in demonstrations before. But they learned and grew. Teachers, nurses, doctors, professors joined. A universal battle against cutbacks to #healthcare, #transportation & #education.

The imperial core has gained $15 trillion through exorbitant privilege since 1970, getting higher returns on foreign assets than what they pay on foreign debt. This privilege is financed by transfers from the global South, outstripping aid flows many times over.

The Yellow Vests movement started over a diesel tax. But they ended up protesting everything: rising costs, hungry children, unaffordable life.

France 2018: President Macron taxed diesel - the only gas poor ppl could afford. Public transport gutted. Hospitals closed. Poor ppl depended on diesel cars. Then Macron taxed that. The Yellow Vests were born.

No Kings is a slogan with no teeth, co-opted by the corporate Democrat machine. The MAGA movement is just top-down demagoguery. The Yellow Vests in France were grassroots with real demands and direct action.

The only thing missing with this excellent long thread is a class analysis. A breakdown of democracy within a capitalist government and system. These are not side issues. They are part of the breakdown. Even though the post is correct from an accounting and macroeconomic fundamental understanding, here is a link that fills in some of the gaps.

Money is a creature of the state.
A "simple public monopoly".
But ask yourselves a question... who has control?
MMT stories start with money as a creature of law.
Laws written by puppets for capital.
The facade of government for and by the people should no longer be a lie anyone sells or even believes any longer.
This isn't just the US.
Capitalism as an ideological framework and the institutions capitalists created to serve their missions is not to be confused with a government for and by the people.
So what does MMT get the public?
Well, in a positivist stance, not a lot. You have no power to influence legislation (proven empirically by Gilens and Page's study published by Princeton University in 2014) But from a "what then hell are they doing to us" perspective, you can glean a lot.
It also helps to understand geopolitical issues, which sadly, we cannot impact at the ballot box, but we can mobilize to impact with strategic organizing and direct action.
I can answer nearly every question on the MMT exam. This isn't an issue of me "not knowing", this is an issue of trying to make others who fancy themselves smart, to deal with the aspect of MMT that some try to pretend isn't part of MMT while developers and others "acceptable" within the community advance candidates and speak of "sourcing the vote".
