If you have a history of making bad calls consistently, you shouldn't have a job making calls at the highest level of sports. If you are bad at your job, you get fired.

Why is this not the case for umpires/referees?

Social media has only made their bad calls more apparent/viral so you would think that would make the MLB take more action towards removing genuinely bad umpires.

That being said, look at Angel Hernandez. They tried to get rid of him, he said it was discrimination. It was clear as day that he was just horrible. Hell, his "retirement" ended up being a settlement.

This might even be a money play by the MLB to see how many people tune in just to see what kind of absurd and clearly wrong call is made.
