Yes, the truly painful aspect of the Northeast's situation is that it's not simply a case of "a backward region failing to keep up with development," but rather a region that once dedicated its best resources, workers, technology, and youth to the nation's industrialization, only to be left behind by the changing times after fulfilling its historical mission.

The title "eldest son of the Republic (共和国长子)" is not a romanticized one. Anshan Iron and Steel, FAW, Shenyang Aircraft Corporation, shipbuilding, heavy machinery, coal, petrochemicals… the Northeast bore a significant portion of the earliest industrial backbone of the People's Republic of China. Later, the combined impacts of state-owned enterprise reform, industrial restructuring, coastal opening, and competition before and after joining the WTO led to a massive contraction of the old industrial system.

Strictly speaking, the large-scale layoffs began in the 1990s and cannot be entirely attributed to the WTO, but globalization and the further concentration of industries in the southeast coastal areas after the WTO did exacerbate this imbalance.

The most cruel aspect is that industrial decline can be self-reinforcing:

Fewer jobs → young people leaving → decreased consumption and tax base → new businesses less willing to come → even more young people leaving.

Therefore, population loss is not only a consequence but also a cause of the next round of decline.

Moreover, the sense of loss felt by people in Northeast China is different from the general feeling of "slow economic development." It's more like:

"I raised this family, and now that family has become wealthy, I'm growing old in the same old room."

Therefore, when we talk about "revitalizing Northeast China," the real key isn't just adding more projects, but whether we can recreate an industrial ecosystem that makes young people feel they have a future there.

Aerospace, shipbuilding, automobiles, robotics, high-end equipment, and energy are all sectors where Northeast China has a strong foundation.

If this round of development can truly attract back the industrial chain, private investment, and young people, then we can truly transform "the eldest son of the Republic" from a commemorative term back into a present reality.

Sometimes, in a country's development history, those who should never be forgotten are precisely those who paved the way for those who came after, only to be left behind on the old path themselves.

Europe calling Chinese trade “colonisation” is fucking obscene.

Britain fought two Opium Wars against China to force open Chinese markets while British merchants flooded the country with opium.

That was colonialism.

China selling cheaper steel, chemicals, machinery and industrial components to willing European buyers is called trade.

Apparently colonialism now means:

“We opened the market, and then somebody else became better at manufacturing than us.”

And spare me the sudden tears over 300,000 European factory jobs.

When China entered the WTO era and its old industrial base went through brutal restructuring, more than 20 million of Chinese workers lost their jobs. Entire northeastern industrial communities absorbed the human cost — unemployment, broken families, lost livelihoods and despair.

Where was Europe’s civilizational mourning then?

Chinese workers were told:

adapt. compete. reform. become efficient.

Now European industry faces the same pressure and suddenly competition itself is “colonisation.”

So Chinese workers losing their livelihoods was economic reform.
European workers losing theirs is Chinese aggression.

Fascinating moral arithmetic.

And the article accidentally admits the real problem:

European companies will continue buying from China because they have shareholders to satisfy.

There it is.

China did not invade Europe.
China did not force Europe at gunpoint to buy Chinese components.

European companies are choosing Chinese suppliers because they are cheaper, faster and more competitive.

Europe taxed its energy.
Europe raised its industrial costs.
Europe regulated itself into paralysis.
Europe allowed manufacturing capacity to decay.

And now it has found the perfect explanation:

China “colonised” us.

No.

China built factories.
Europe built excuses.

If losing a manufacturing competition is colonialism, perhaps Europe should apologize again for the centuries when it practiced the real thing.
