We are creatures of creativity,
of love,
and of joy,
Yet we take it away.
Because it has to be good.
And it has to be correct.
And it has to be profitable.
What does it take to be free?
Perfection, a poem (1/2)
If I'm not perfect, what am I?
I'm not creative if I'm not an artist,
I'm not sociable if I'm not popular,
I'm not successful if I'm not an expert.
Why do I put these rules around my life
What ever happened to doing,
being,
becoming?
I am fast approaching the 6 month mark in my new job in complex neuro rehab.
I have learnt a hell of a lot about myself, my work, and my coworkers.
My service users have achieved some incredible goals.

"When patients experience a process that has so thoroughly excluded them, it often no longer matters how 'right' the decision made by the MDT was or how helpful their other recommendations might be."

Had the carpenter in at work today so we jumped at the opportunity to reinvent our therapy room / OT kitchen. It’s such a brilliant opportunity to be part of the planning process #OccupationalTherapy#neuroOT#adaptations

“The garden of the world has no limits, except in your mind.”
Today is ‘Imbolc’, an ancient Celtic tradition, which marks the first stirrings of spring. Historically, it was the Shepherds’ holiday before the lambing season.
These days, people make pledges for the year.
#imbolc
Mine are:
To notice the seasons; the colours of the sky (today it was purple, pink and grey), the growing of leaves and buds, and the changing colour of the leaves.
One act of kindness every month; I want to be more mindful of these moments, so I will draw my attention to these.
"Difficult patient/parent"
This is completely subjective, judgemental & dangerous
Will very likely lead to all staff reading that statement in the notes, dismissing a lot of what the patient/parents tell them
Perfect example here, from @therhythmthief

"Bed blocker"
This term is given to inpatients deemed medically fit for discharge from a hospital setting, but unable to be safely discharged yet (no care package/home available, awaiting equipment..)
Instills guilt & shame in patients themselves
They hear
Please don't use it
"Refuses to communicate"
Another dreadful term used
We absolutely must explore all options possible, to address a person's unique needs/styles in order to communicate

"Acopia"
This is quite often written in the notes as both the reason for hospital admission and as a diagnosis!
Quite sloppy on the professional's part who wrote it. If a person is deemed not to be 'coping' - further, deeper investigation needs to be done to find out how & why
