One in a million Monday. First of all, my apologies to all placental pathologists reading this tweet, this is not personal, your work is noble, and you are appreciated. But I can't say I'm a fan of placental pathology. The reason is the times placental pathology provides any measure of clinical utility are exceedingly rare. The mother is there, the baby is there, and looking at the placenta for signs of a disease process is like taking your car to the mechanic and watching him check the plumbing in your garage. With all that in mind, pathology is at least in part the science of looking for the unexpected. And in this particular case, this tenet of pathology was fully and mind-blowingly realized. The attached pictures are from the placenta of an unfortunate young lady with symptoms of preeclampsia at 38 weeks of gestation. No history of medical problems at the time of delivery.
