Delighted to be featured in @RecruiterMag today on something I feel strongly about.
On Results Day, we should celebrate every young person receiving their results. But we also need to stop pretending university is the only prestigious route to success.
University is brilliant for many but apprenticeships, degree apprenticeships, vocational training and going straight into work are not consolation prizes.
The question at 18 shouldn’t automatically be “Which university are you going to?” It should be: “What career and life do you want and what is the smartest route to get you there?”
AI makes that choice even more important. The next generation won’t simply compete against AI. They’ll compete against people who know how to use AI brilliantly.
There isn’t a first-class route called university and a second-class route called everything else.
Don’t follow the crowd. Choose the route that’s right for you.

Almost four children in every Year 6 classroom are on course to be claiming out-of-work benefits by the age of 21.
That should be a national wake-up call.
I'm proud to have contributed to this @Recruitermag article on why we need to tackle worklessness much earlier, rethink our obsession with university as the only measure of success, and prepare young people for an AI-driven, skills-first economy.
Britain doesn't lack talent. It lacks enough pathways that turn potential into productive careers.

Britain now has more than 1 million young people not in education, employment or training.
The solution is staring us in the face. Use the tax system to make hiring young people financially attractive again.
Cut Employer NI for under-25 hires. Introduce major tax breaks for apprenticeships and graduate schemes. Reward businesses that invest in early careers talent.
If government can use tax policy to drive green investment, it can use it to stop a generation being locked out of work.
