Meet Jeff Yan

the guy behind hyperliquid, arguably the most successful crypto company ever built without external funding

but the story didn’t start with hyperliquid

long before crypto, jeff was obsessed with math and physics. by 18, he had won gold at the international physics olympiad and ranked 24th in the world

he then went to harvard to study mathematics and computer science. after graduating, he joined hudson river trading, one of the best high-frequency trading firms in the world

jeff was very good at what he did, but the work started to feel less meaningful to him. making an already great trading system slightly better was interesting, but he wanted to work on something that could have a bigger impact

that eventually pulled him toward crypto

his first attempt was a prediction market, but it failed. instead of giving up, jeff moved to puerto rico with around $10,000 and started market-making crypto from a laptop

over the next few years, he built that operation into a serious business and learned the markets from the inside

then terra collapsed, followed by ftx. the events made jeff look at crypto differently. he came to believe that the problem wasn’t just bad actors or bad traders. the underlying trading infrastructure itself needed to be better

so he shut down the business he had already built and decided to create the market he actually wanted to trade on

that became hyperliquid

this time, jeff chose a very different path. there was no vc funding, no outside investors taking a piece of the company and no traditional market-making setup. it was a small team building financial infrastructure from scratch

a few years later, what started as an onchain perpetuals exchange has grown into something much bigger

and jeff’s ambition for hyperliquid is probably the simplest way to understand where this is going:

a house for all of finance

what stands out about jeff’s story is that he never seemed interested in simply getting better at an existing game

when the existing game no longer made sense to him, he left and built something different

and eventually, that became hyperliquid
