Portugal's general strike is a reminder that the lessons of Britain's 1926 General Strike still matter today.
When workers feel their rights, pay, and job security are under threat, they organise and make their voices heard.
If you want to read more about the history of the 1926 General Strike and how it equates to today’s struggles you can purchase our book on it here - it’s a great read - and all proceeds go into strike funds supporting industrial action:

We want to send our thoughts and concerns to the workforce and community of Port Talbot after the devastating fire.
Thankfully no-one has been but hurt but this fire will cast a long shadow over the community.
We echo the thoughts of @UniteSharon in calling for measures to be put in place to protect jobs both at Tata and down the supply chain during any period of disruption, and for Tata and the government to ensure that operations are rebuilt as swiftly as possible

This should be a good one:
National Shop Stewards Network (NSSN) Conference 2026 this June in London.
One of the highlights will be hearing directly from the striking Birmingham bin workers, who have been at the centre of a dispute that has now been running for over a year. Their determination, resilience and fight for fair treatment offer important lessons for trade unionists and campaigners across the movement.
The conference will also bring together Unite members involved in a range of ongoing disputes, alongside workers from other unions, providing a valuable opportunity to share experiences, build solidarity and discuss how we strengthen our collective campaigns.
With a programme of keynote speakers, discussions on defending jobs, pay and public services, and forums on the challenges facing workers today, it promises to be an important event for everyone committed to standing up for working people.

@CodgeyBhoy The national coordinator for the community section has written out coordinators and others. It's a pile of factional shit with zero evidence to back it up.
From what I've seen of Dubbins campaign I'd be surprised if anyone bothers voting for him.
@SimonDubbins67 Unite organisers are helping deliver wins in:
- winter fuel campaign with retired members
- huge membership growth and pay wins in finance combine
- winning on pay through the CAT combine.
- & fighting for a win in Birmingham
Respect?! Can't really see any from you Simon 🤔
.@Nigel_Farage "Pure cold rage" you asked for it. You got it.
A 72-year-old Sikh pensioner had his head stamped on. Cheekbone shattered. Six teenagers arrested.
Your words have consequences. Your silence is complicity.
Happy now? 👑
Firstly, our deepest condolences go out to Henry Nowak’s family, friends and all who knew him. Hampshire police clearly have serious questions to answer.
It’s an unfortunate fact that in every community there will be individuals who are motivated by hate. On occasions there are and will be individuals who are seriously ill, let down by the failing, under funded services that may have prevented awful tragedies.
Those who attempt to divide us today, blaming faith, and particularly the carrying of the Kirpan, a small ceremonial curved sword kept in a sheath; a metaphor for defending the truth, protecting the weak and opposing injustice, are potentially fanning the flames which may result in people seeking revenge against the 565,000 Sikh community in the UK, most of whom will possibly carry the Kirpan as an important part of their faith.
There is more that unites us than divides us. Please don’t let hate win.
There are over 250 knife related crimes in the UK each and every day.
That should be the focus of all politicians.
As Birmingham’s new administration takes shape, residents and workers alike need leadership that delivers.
There is already a deal on the table to bring the bin strike to a conclusion - one that offers a fair resolution for workers and provides the basis to restore Birmingham’s waste service to the standard residents deserve.
The incoming administration must move quickly, engage constructively and get this agreement over the line. Birmingham cannot afford further delay - clean streets, respected workers and a functioning waste service should be the priority from day one.

Congratulations to the members at Doncaster First Bus who have won pay parity with their colleagues in Sheffield after taking several days strike action.
It proves that when workers refuse to be treat like second rate employees and are willing to fight back with the unequivocal backing of their union, they can win.

Under my leadership, we have established the first dedicated community campaigning arm in the trade union movement - Unite for a Workers' Economy. This helped deliver ground-breaking campaigns, including working with retired members to stop govt scrapping winter fuel payments.
@jpcookie50@stuzi_pants The Reunite the union campaign have shelled out £168 for Terry to do this video apparently. Terry wouldn't have a clue who Sharon Graham is!
@Re_Unite_Union Well done! The only people who remotely like John Terry are Chelsea fans, his brother Paul who's also a bell end and Gareth Barry's wife.
Alienated 900000 members in one naff video.
Who's next Joey Barton? 🤣
@jvarnam@joeml805 Ahh, so you're prepared to credit Sharon Graham for the list of defeats and not the victories. Likewise, are the regional officers and reps not responsible for the defeats as well as victories? And you should look at the officers new union involvement in the Port Talbot defeat 🤔
Britain has the dirtiest rivers, the most expensive energy, the least reliable trains, the most overcrowded prisons, the worst access to healthcare and the widest gap between rich and poor in all of Europe. If you want a verdict on 40 years of neoliberalism, there it is.
🚩 Moseley shall not pass! 🚩
90 years ago, Whitechapel’s working class took a stand against fascism and hatred. They were joined in solidarity by workers, activists and leftists from across the movement and the country, and fought back Moseley’s fascists from marching in their streets.
Join us on Cable Street this October to celebrate their resistance - full programme below, with more to come…
