As this chapter closes, we welcome further public & private investments to make them a reality. We have until 2032 to raise the funding for the Phase II (lids) to stay on timeline. Whatever is not funded by then is still "future-proofed" and can be pursued at a later date.

One year ago this month, the City of Austin committed to an initial $104MM investment in caps and stitches over I-35. The stitches will create welcoming avenues that shield Austinites as they pass over the toxic, heavy-industry impacts of the new 20+ lane urban highway.

Last week, Austin City Council approved funding to begin construction of the I-35 caps and stitches proposal that includes both crossings of the Red Line Parkway. Learn more: https://t.co/fuUFiOocDH

The caps will increase private investment in Austin by recovering valuable real estate for local use that would otherwise be lost to the international highway lanes below. Today, Mayor Watson has put to rest a reopened debate about the commitment our city had already made.

Our region can have a connected network of greenways as our peers cities do--this requires an ongoing community effort, funded by residents who care about their city.
Join us this week to learn more, meet fellow supporters, and to donate to bring the Red Line Parkway to reality.

I think the larger caps in downtown would have massive positive change to the city but my issue is that they plan to only do parks which are really just financial liabilities to the city and while they are nice to have, don't know if that's the best place to have them.
I would instead restitch the urban fabric by creating a row of smaller party-wall connected two story buildings all along the east-west length of some of the caps. These buildings would have commercial in the bottom and small scale residential. The units could be constructed by the private sector on a very long term lease and the city passes along the maintenance cost of the caps to the company leasing the land.
The issue is not if the cap is a good idea, the issue is if the cap's cost outweight all the good it can do. If we can still restitch the east and west urban fabric while creating an environment that actually generated the revenue needed to build/maintain the caps, it could be worth the investment.
This is what was done in Columbus, OH a project called The Cap at Union Station Columbus.

🚨 BIG NEWS FOR AUSTIN 🚨
The federal government has officially given Project Connect Light Rail the green light to move forward.
This decision confirms that the project has cleared a major federal review and can now continue toward construction with federal partnership.
This is a huge step in building better transit for our growing city. This moment is the result of years of community work, planning, and persistence from people who believe Austin deserves more transit options.
