What the field record still shows is a repeated contact: Clovis tools and the last in place mammoth, mastodon, and horse remains sit under that carbon-rich layer at site after site. Above it, that assemblage is largely gone. A few later DNA traces and isolated Holocene survivors in Alaska or on Wrangel do not put living herds back on the Clovis landscape of the Southwest.
A remnant population after a crash is not the same thing as “nothing happened.” The climate reversed, the ice sheets pulsed, biomass burned, and a hunting culture tied to those animals disappears at the same horizon. That coincidence still needs an explanation. Overkill and ordinary climate have never fully supplied one.
