I think the offensive debate, old school mind set, is to take your āA swingā and do damage before you get to 2 strikes and then with 2 make some kind of adjustment, to fight and foul off tough pitches and shorten up to put something in play. I think the best hitters do that with 2 strikes and still capable of slugging when with the get a 2 strike mistake.
I donāt think anyone in on the old school side of the coin is fighting for weak contact 0-0 just to say you didnāt strike out.
The Brewers Rays and Guardians are where they are because of this approach. The Dodgers traditionally are successful because they dominate the strike zone, take their walks and do damage when you have to come back in the zone.
I donāt have all the answers but I love baseball because of the ups and downs and constant grind. So hereās some thoughts for the āX hittingā war that is going on right now.
@kwhitmore@RAJr_20@GoslinTodd So the ALDS is a good conversation piece. Iām strictly posing a question here, not taking a side. Are we good with a combined 40 kās in game 4 and 5 for the sox?
Maybe? Would love to see the breakdown. If we are talking goals then we have to only talk home runs right? Do you look at goals per shots? Then you have to look at home runs per swings, not at bats. Maybe someone smarter than me can do the breakdown to see where it averages out haha
@SouthJerzGiants@Lclimateguy@Mike_P_Zimmer@redturn2 One could argue itās harder to score goals in soccer. In hockey. That does not automatically make them the hardest thing to do in sports.
I do think hitting is a crazy skill set thatās very different than many other āelite athleteā skills.
Any professional going up against another professional in their sport (for example: Mike Tyson vs Jacob DeGrom) will never give you info as what is more difficult. So in baseball Mike has no chance against DeGrom, but in boxing Mike would kill ja..well everyone.
So sport to sport professionals is almost impossible to compare in real competition. Off sport will always get dominated.
But, Jacob DeGrom can train in boxing every day and get better. I donāt know if Mike Tyson would ever touch a 100 MPH fastball (our training) off a pitching machine.
A baseball player can shoot uncontested 3ās all day. But in an NBA game, against an NBA defender, we arenāt scoring a single point. But Iām not sure NBA guys are hitting anything even in BP.
Does that make sense?
Pitchers are in control of everything, the data, analytics, slow mo cams, technology is exponentially more resourceful for them because the ball is in their hand. The only variable they have is whether the mound is good or not. They donāt have to adjust to timing issues, they get to create them.
And it does seem they are all throwing harder than ever. Argue about the radar guns all you want. Collectively, they all feel like Nolan Ryan or Troy Percival in the box these days.
Also, there so many pitchers now, guys are facing like 200 plus (this is a guess) different pitchers a year. Thatās crazy hahah
@redturn2 Justin.
Thanks for your thoughts and insight, this is a great read šš½
Curiosity, what "X hitting war" are you referring to?
Beyond this, from the 30,000' view, how would you explain this?
Can it be "as simple as" compete/compete/compete in a game of failure?
Thanks! šš½
Unless you say skating backwards on ice and timing up a one-timer slap shot, Iām not sure what is even close. And even in that skill if you miss you donāt walk back to the bench and wait an hour til your next chance.
āHitting is the hardest skill in all of sportsā
Of course hitting is difficult, especially at the MLB level. Calling hitting the hardest skill in all of sports, however, requires a definition of difficulty, a way to measure it, and a meaningful comparison across sports. Without those, itās merely an opinion presented as an established fact.
If a hitter has a steep path, he might need to feel like he is swinging up to match pitch plane. If a hitter is ācollapsing the back sideā (old school terminology) he might need to think and feel like he is swinging down to get on plane!
There isnāt one path, name of the game is to match plane and create room for error.
But some dude who didnāt play varsity baseball is ācertifiedā and telling me to swing up and look at my exit velo??? I wonder who yall gonna listen to
@GoslinTodd 1st page, 2nd paragraph! I was trying to say it doesnāt matter if itās old or new. If itās right for that hitter great. Doesnāt mean it because the model for every hitter.
Finding the problems traditionally isnāt the issue. Solutions are. Data tells whatās already happened. And usually, in my experience, singling out one fix leads to another problem.
Example: front arm bar in āthe loadā easy fix right? Just train front arm with a small bat.
But then what happens when the top hand gets added? Now we have to address that.
See what i mean?
2 quick opinions, 1 thatās a very subtle difference that unless you can see his letters on his jersey, you probably canāt see the difference in glove height. 2 which kinda goes with 1, the way heās turned, you prob canāt see his glove from the plate.
I always thought if you have to slow it down and zoom in to see it, prob gonna be tough to see in real time.
