I think the same concept exists elsewhere in things like cryptozoology and Flat Earth Theory, where the only argument defenders can give is "read more [this or that]", and I think everyone goes through phases where they're absorbed into something that's essentially not real or questionable, specifically as children...

However the difference is when I was a child and interested in Bigfoot and Chupacabra and exposed to a lot of differing information, as I grew up I was able to actually discern that most if not all of the "literature" for lack of a term on the topic was mostly bullshit, and then I didn't value that topical material anymore. Generally I'd imagine the realization is supposed to hit around middle school as people start to understand and experience socially what having the "burden of proof" means as you are socializing with peers and sharing your thoughts and feelings more and more, so by this point you should understand what it means to challenge a claim and what's required to back it up.

The problem is most of these "defenders" whether you're talking about "Marxists" or "Flat Earthers" haven't actually grown up from an intellectual standpoint so their analysis of information is through a frame of "if it's something I like and it aligns with my thoughts (worldview) > good information. if it's contrary to what I like and goes against my thoughts > bad and not real". This probably comes from both being overly coddled or via escapism from neglect carried into adulthood.

That isn't to say it's all useless information, but another trait of these topics is as it's consistently being challenged the "literature" or argument devolves more and more and becomes increasingly unhinged. I don't need to explain the lengths and stretches of imagination that Flat Earthers give, but it always starts as just a simple mundane "the earth is flat" and as you peel back layers and actually DO read more, it's just completely divorced from any rational or logical angle (if it was married at all to start).

So it becomes pretty easy as a sensible individual to say "No, I'm not going to waste my time on dribbling theory" when the debate or argument is essentially being played out like this:

A 7 year old: "Santa is real!"

A grown adult: "Well, no Santa isn't real. He's fictional."

7 y/o: "Nuh uh, he's real! Haven't you ever been to the Mall?? Haven't you watched 'Santa Claus Is Coming To Town?'"

Adult: "Well, yeah, and those are fictional too and that's not really Santa. It doesn't prove Santa is an actual person. Santa isn't real."

7 y/o: "Yeah right, what do you know?? My 2nd grade teacher taught us all about Santa's naughty and nice list, you think that's fake? Listen, why don't you go read 'A Visit From St. Nicholas' and watch 'Miracle on 34th Street' and educate yourself instead of being an Anti-Clausian elitist!"

I can't help but get deja vu from after I got my Deck getting told the same things about performance of the thing from people. Like, yeah? It's an oversized phone with a gamepad, thumb track pads, and PC architecture. I wasn't expecting to play hi-fi triple As with raytracing in giga8K anyway. I'm not sure what exactly people were truly expecting from a 6 inch cube that is limited to AMD components at the moment. The price is a major fucking stinker that said which makes it hard to cope
