I can't help but laugh at these Republican ads here in Texas attacking James Talarico and Gina Hinojosa for everything from how much land China owns in the state to higher property taxes — when Republicans have completely run the state for nearly three decades.
And that's not an exaggeration.
A Democrat hasn't won a statewide race in Texas since 1994, and the last time Democrats had any power in the state legislature was 2002.
Which means that everything they're trying to attack these two Democrats for is literally the result of what Republicans have passed or allowed to happen in Texas, considering they've been in full control of this state for nearly 30 years.
All the while, as Ken Paxton tries to slander Talarico, with Republicans trying to question his "masculinity," and Greg Abbott keeps pushing lies about Hinojosa, neither Republican has the courage to get on a stage and debate either of their Democratic opponents.
Because nothing says "we're proud of our record as Republicans" quite like trying to blame the party that hasn't had any power in the state for nearly three decades for issues your party voted to approve, while being too big of cowards to debate the Democrats they claim are "dangerous" for Americans.
How anyone can vote for these Republican frauds is absolutely mind-boggling.
Black jockeys won fifteen of the first twenty-eight Kentucky Derbies.
By 1921 there were none. Not fewer — NONE. They were removed from the sport entirely and it took sixty-nine years before another Black jockey rode in the Derby.
Isaac Murphy was the best of them. He was born enslaved in Kentucky. He won the Derby three times — the first jockey ever to do it and rode with a win rate he reported at around forty-four per cent, a figure no modern jockey approaches.
As prize money and prestige grew, white jockeys organised to force Black riders out — boxing them in on the rail, refusing to ride against them, pressuring owners.
Racing associations stopped licensing them.
Within twenty years, an entire profession that Black men had dominated since before the Civil War was simply emptied.
This is the pattern that repeats everywhere in this archive and almost nobody names it: Black excellence does not get pushed out of the poor jobs. It gets pushed out of the jobs that become lucrative.
We must never forget our history
33 years ago this weekend, two Delta Force snipers made a choice almost nobody would make.
Master Sergeant Gary Gordon was 33, from Lincoln, Maine, with a wife and two young kids at home. Sergeant First Class Randy Shughart was 35, a farm kid from Newville, Pennsylvania.
On October 3, 1993, they were in a Black Hawk circling over Mogadishu when another Black Hawk, Super 64, was shot down. Pilot Mike Durant was alive in the wreckage with a broken back and a crushed leg. His crew was hurt. There were no friendly ground forces anywhere near them, and hundreds of armed militia and locals were already converging on the crash site.
From the air, Gordon and Shughart could see exactly what was coming.
They asked to be dropped in. Command said no.
They asked again. No again.
They asked a third time and finally got the green light.
Their helicopter set them down nearby and they fought their way to the wreck on foot. Two men, carrying only what they had on them. They pulled Durant out of the cockpit, set him up in a safer position, and started holding off the crowd.
For a while, it worked. They kept the mob back with precise, steady fire while the numbers against them kept growing.
Shughart was killed first.
Gordon kept fighting alone. When he was nearly out of ammunition, he went back to Durant, handed him a rifle, and told him good luck. Then he went back out. He was killed minutes later.
Durant was captured, beaten, and held for 11 days. He came home alive. He has said for decades that he's only here because of those two men.
In 1994 Gordon and Shughart were posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor, the first since Vietnam. The Navy later named two ships after them, the USNS Gordon and the USNS Shughart.
They didn't stumble into that fight. They watched it from above, understood the odds, and asked three times to go anyway.
Gary Gordon and Randy Shughart. Remember their names.
Here's what's going to happen. Trump loses the midterms. He declares massive voting fraud, calls supporters to attack immediately. GOP refuses to accept results. FBI seizes ballots and voting machines within days. Results stall for weeks. Republican officials cancel results in lost districts, order new votes. Protests erupt. Troops deploy under the Insurrection Act. January 3, Congress refuses to seat the Democrats. This isn't prediction. It's pattern. They've already done each of these things.
