NEWS: Twentieth Century Society has submitted a listing application for the River and Rowing Museum in Henley, Oxfordshire (1989-97), by David Chipperfield Architects.
Opened by Queen Elizabeth II in November 1998, the building is an exceptional example of late-twentieth-century contextual Modernist architecture. With formal references to local river boathouses, the traditional wooden barns of Oxfordshire and drawing on lessons from Japanese architecture, it was shaped by the ideas of critical regionalism and grounded in local context, climate, and culture.
The project represents a significant point in the history of David Chipperfield Architects; it was their first major UK commission and first significant cultural building – a sector in which they have since developed an international reputation. In his letter of support for the application, Sir David has credited the project with pioneering themes that became central to their work, such as the exploration of natural light and sensitivity to context, while developing the practice's approach to dialogue and advocacy, lessons that directly informed later projects such as their seminal Neues Museum in Berlin.
Sadly the River and Rowing Museum closed in September 2025 after 27 years of operation and the future of the site is currently being reviewed by Museum trustees. However David Chipperfield Architects and the Society are convinced that the flexibility of the original design will allow the building to serve a new purpose in a way that respects and preserves its architectural character.

Today we celebrate International Women’s Day.
This photograph — “Weavers on the Bauhaus Staircase, 1927” by T. Lux Feininger — captures some of the remarkable women who shaped the Bauhaus. As members of the textile workshop, they transformed weaving into one of the most innovative and influential disciplines of modern design.
Their work combined craft, experimentation and modern thinking — embodying the Bauhaus idea of uniting art, design and everyday life. The legacy of these women continues to influence textile and design culture around the world.
