🌊 Did you know that plastics have been found in the deepest recorded part of the ocean?
The Mariana Trench, roughly 11,000 meters (36K feet) down at its deepest, holds detectable levels of microplastics. These are carried by turbidity currents, where they can persist in the ocean for thousands of years, breaking down into smaller and smaller particles.
❓But what kind of damage do plastics cause to oceans long-term? Read more about how microplastics impact the ocean’s ability to sequester carbon here: https://t.co/HgQoj37m4f

🌊 Earth already has all of the materials we need to solve the plastic pollution crisis. From bamboo to seaweed, businesses are turning the tide with next-gen materials. Check out some of the businesses at our Plastic Pollution Solutions Expo:
🌿 Notpla brought all sorts of seaweed innovation, including edible packaging you can literally eat after use.
🎍Ettitude turns fast-growing bamboo into luxurious bedding so that you don’t have to sleep on plastic sheets.
🐚 Shellworks uses nature's recycling system to grow packaging that never becomes waste, made from microbes and home compostable.

Over 1 million marine organisms are killed each year due to plastic pollution in the ocean. It's time to end plastic pollution.
There is no planet B. Use less, buy less, waste less.

🎃 Halloween costumes are like single-use plastics. 🗑️ Most of them are made with polluting plastics like polyester, worn only once, and then thrown away. 🪄✨But with a little creativity and imagination you can concoct a plastic-free and low- waste outfit—without adding more pollution to the environment.

How did we ever survive without plastic? With:
🫙 Reusable materials like glass, tin, ceramics, and cloth
🫙 Returnable container systems like beverage bottles
🫙 And truly recyclable materials like glass, metal cans, and paper.
Plastic is Plan B for the fossil fuel industry and it's wreaking havoc on planet Earth. We must use nontoxic systems and materials that don't harm people and the planet.
