Roman Catholics, Eastern Orthodox, and many atheists make a similar argument when it comes to Biblical canon: "The Church existed first and had the authority to determine what books belonged in the Bible."

But the reality is different. God inspired the writing of Scripture. The books already had authority the moment the pen hit the papyrus. The canon was decided by God before any councils came together — they just recognized what already was authoritative.

Flipping this around, and making the Church itself the supreme authority, creates issues. This creates a system where the true authority is the institutional body — it gets to decide what is "Christian" and what is not. This is why we have people joining these churches despite disagreeing with their doctrines. "At least I'm in the right church."

But that was never how Christ's Church was structured.

Jesus is our High Priest. He is the cornerstone of the church. He is God. Scripture is God-breathed and is infallible and inerrant. It is the standard by which all things are to be judged.

This is why the Bereans were commended. They tested Paul's teachings woth Scripture.

Let's be like the Bereans and hold God's Word as our supreme authority.

Since there is a little chatter going on on X about the sin of schism, this is a good time to remember the principled, godly, Scriptural, confessional, catholic-spirited, churchly argument of the PCA founders in the Message to All Churches (1973).

"When a denomination will not exercise discipline and its courts have become heterodox or disposed to tolerate error, the minority finds itself in the anomalous position of being submissive to a tolerant and erring majority. In order to proclaim the truth and to practice the discipline which they believe obedience to Christ requires, it then becomes necessary for them to separate. This is the exercise of discipline in reverse. It is how we view our separation.

Some of our brethren have felt that the present circumstances do not yet call for such a remedy. They remain in the Presbyterian Church in the United States. We trust they will continue to contend for the faith, though our departure makes their position more difficult. We express to them our hope that God will bless their efforts, and that there may come a genuine spiritual awakening in the Presbyterian Church in the United States.

Most people in the comments missing the point here: Luther didn’t remove books from the Bible and Trent didn’t add them. Before Trent and its addition of the anathema clause it was always an open conversation. The 66 is what everyone agreed upon, the question was about the apocrypha (a term not invented by but clarified on by Athanasius in his 39th Festal Letter in AD 367 to describe the other books of the OT outside of the 39). If the 73 canon was, as many in the comments to my OP want to reductionistically claim, a settled issue going back centuries then you wouldn’t have the Jeromes, Athasiuses, Cyrils, Gregory the Greats, Ximenes, and Cajetans of the world all openly discussing and disagreeing with various Deuterocanonicals and their inclusion vs. exclusions as inspired canon. These aren’t randoms, they’re Saints, Bishops, Popes, Cardinals, and Doctors of the Church.

I think a lot of people would be surprised to hear how close the vote on their inclusion in an official list attached to an anathema was at Trent. At the Council of Trent, considerable debate took place on whether a distinction should be made between two classes of books (canonical and apocryphal) or whether three classes should be identified (Acknowledged Books; the Disputed Books of the New Testament, later generally received; and the Apocrypha of the Old Testament). Finally on 8 April 1546, by a vote of 24 to 15, with 16 abstensions, the Council issued a decree (De Canonicis Scripturis) in which, for the first time in the history of the Church, the question of the contents of the Bible was made an absolute article of faith and confirmed by an anathema.
