Anne-babası tutuklanınca kemik kanserine yakalanan ve pasaport krizi yüzünden tedavisi geciktirildiği için 7 Mayıs 2020'de vefat eden Ahmet Burhan Ataç'ın (8) babası Harun Ataç, 'ceza'yı tamamlayıp tahliye oldu. Eşi Zekiye Ataç'a ve kızına kavuştu. Ahmetsiz kalbimiz buruk ama bu tablo da çok güzel, çok ümit verici. Ne güzel sürpriz hazırlamışlar. Allah kimseye evlat acısı yaşatmasın, sevdiklerinden ayırmasın, özgürlükle imtihan etmesin.

“Esteemed members of the United Nations Human Rights Committee,

I speak to you today because I can, as a voice for those who cannot speak, those silenced by a regime that has systematically suppressed civil and political rights in Türkiye. I feel a profound obligation to highlight the human rights violations my beloved people endure under a government that claims to uphold the principles of the ICCPR, yet blatantly disregards them.

In recent years, Turkey has increasingly stifled freedom of expression, criminalizing those who dare to criticize the government. Journalists, academics, activists, and ordinary citizens have been targeted, arrested, and imprisoned simply for exercising their right to speak out or their freedom of association. As of today, Turkey remains one of the world’s leading jailers of journalists.

I, too, have felt the weight of this oppression. For speaking out against injustice, I have been stripped of my citizenship, and my family in Turkey has faced harassment and threats. But this is not about me —it is about the thousands of people whose lives have been shattered overnight…

The Turkish government has wielded emergency decrees to justify mass detentions and dismissals, shattering the lives of countless families.

Yet, perhaps no story better illustrates the depth of this tragedy than that of Yusuf Kerim Sayın, a 6-year-old boy who became the heartbreaking symbol of suffering under this regime. Battling bone cancer, Yusuf captured the nation’s attention in a viral video, crying out for his mother, Gülten Sayın, who had been imprisoned for alleged links to the Gülen movement. His only wish was to have his mother by his side during his final moments.
After an agonizing public battle, her mother was released under a new law that allowed sentences to be postponed for mothers of critically ill children. But the victory came too late—Yusuf’s body, weakened by both his illness and the cruel separation from his mother, could not hold on. He passed away just a year ago, in October 2023. And as if to pour salt into the wound, just a week after burying her son, the government came for his mother once more, demanding she finish serving her sentence.

Yusuf was an innocent child, but he was caught in the ruthless machinery of political repression, one that treats children and their families as mere collateral damage in its pursuit of punishment. His death is not just a personal tragedy — It clearly shows just how far the Turkish government is willing to go to silence and punish its people.

What else should I add after this?

Despite these blatant violations, Turkey continues to claim adherence to the principles of the ICCPR.
On Wednesday and Thursday, October 23rd and 24th, you will listen to the Turkish delegation’s carefully crafted narrative. But I urge you not to be blinded by the beautiful words they will offer. Behind the polished rhetoric lies a cruel reality of widespread repression, arbitrary detentions, and shattered lives. I respectfully ask you not to turn a blind eye to the suffering of the Turkish people.

I urge the Committee to call for immediate reforms, including the restoration of judicial independence and the release of prisoners arbitrary sentenced and detained, particularly mothers separated from their children. Without accountability, Turkey’s human rights abuses will only continue, and the hope for a democratic future will fade further from reach.

To those who are suffering in Turkey, I say this: You are not alone. The world is watching, and there are those of us who will continue to fight for your rights, no matter the cost.
Human rights are not a privilege granted by the state; they are inherent to all of us as human beings. It is our collective responsibility to protect and defend these rights, no matter where violations occur. The people of Turkey deserve nothing less.

I am deeply pained to know that Fethullah Gülen, one of the most enlightened Sufi Islamic scholars in modern times, is no more.

I had the honour of meeting him at his spiritual centre in Pennsylvania, USA, in 2018.

Addressed by his followers as Hoja Efendi (Respected Teacher), Gulen advocated respect for all faiths. In my conversation with him, he showed respect for Hinduism and India, and said he admired Mahatma Gandhi.

His dozens of books and numerous discourses are a strong voice against misuse of Islam for promoting extremism and terrorism, and for enjoying political power (as is happening in his native Turkey and other Muslim countries). Erdogan falsely accused him of orchestrating a coup in 2016.

The Hizmet (service of humanity) Movement inspired by him has been doing commendable work in countries around the world, with the involvement of thousands of highly dedicated volunteers.

May Gulen's legacy of Islamic contribution to a peaceful and spirutally evolving multi-religious world continue to guide both Muslims and non-Muslims.

God Almighty surely has a special place for his soul in His Abode.

I pay my respects with a prayer.
