UPI. MDR. 0.4%. Tax.
I’ve been hearing these words so much lately that even my QR code must be getting nervous!
But all this noise made me think about something much simpler: how dramatically the way I pay has changed.
I remember carrying cash, writing cheques and standing in bank queues for a Demand Draft. Today? Driver — scan. Tolls — scan. Restaurant — scan. Shopkeeper — scan. Done.
UPI didn’t just change how I pay. It changed how I live.
And the scale of that change is remarkable. In August 2026 alone, UPI processed around 24.5 billion transactions worth nearly ₹30 lakh crore. (NPCI)
So what about the much-discussed 0.4% MDR?
First, MDR is not a government tax. Under the new framework, it applies to specified merchant payments above ₹2,000 and is shared within the payments ecosystem. Person-to-person transfers remain free, payments to merchants up to ₹2,000 remain free, and the government says about 96% of merchant transactions remain unaffected.
That makes the more interesting question:
How do we keep something this large fast, secure, innovative and sustainable?
UPI needs technology, servers, cybersecurity, fraud prevention and constant upgrading. At this scale, reliability itself has a cost.
And now comes the part that excites me most.
UPI is travelling too. It already has a presence outside India. Imagine landing abroad, spotting a QR code and paying from your Indian account almost as naturally as you pay your neighbourhood sabziwala.
From standing in a bank queue for a Demand Draft to scanning a QR code across borders — that is quite a journey.
So amid all the UPI-MDR noise, perhaps we should remember the bigger picture.
UPI changed my life. The next chapter could be about changing the way India pays the world.

Extremly terrible experience I had dealing with Mr. Prashant Deshpande of NJ Invest office in Vashi. He is arrogant, lacks courtesy, has low demeanor. Feels like withdrawing all investments made in bonds, SIPs due through NJ due to this fellow. #njiwealth#njinvest#amfi
@StarQuik paid Rs.899/- for 2 dozens of mangos under Order No##2000018955 dt 27th May. Checked 6 Mangos and all were rotten inside. No response from customer care.
It is great that questions are asked for inefficiency. It should be asked to all and no one should be spared including the judiciary for inordinate delays..... But who will do this........???#DelhiHighCourt@LiveLawIndia@rsprasad

Arnab, each time I see Nishant Verma on the panel, I just switch your channel. I just can't stand his repulsive and meaningless chattering all the time @ArnabGoswamiRtv@republic
World Cup. Should India loose today for obvious reasons (well, to lower Pakistan's chance of entering the last four) or try and continue its winning streak against England? Let the game remain untouched by anything except fair sense of competitiveness.....I believe.
