The response by China State Council’s Hong Kong and Macao Affairs Office to Jonathan Sumption’s reasons for quitting the HKCFA is out. And it’s epic (and threatening - more on that below).
The English version is here: https://t.co/LIr3rSnewb. I quote some parts of it, which I think are self-explanatory (the link distinguishes between direct quotes and paraphrasings, but reading the Chinese version and it’s clear that even the paraphrasings are pretty much just quotes, hence I do not differentiate between the two when quoting below).
“[Sumption] has willingly become a tool of British political manipulation, making people not only shocked but also feel ashamed and disgraced for him.”
“Sumption has completely abandoned his professional spirit and ethics, and utterly betrayed the dignity of the rule of law and his judicial peers.”
“Sumption’s wanton defamation … is filled with prejudiced political assumptions and malicious political hype … Sumption has brought shame to the sacred title of "judge.”
“Sumption is willingly collaborates [sic] with malevolent forces, acting as a pawn and vanguard in the destruction of Hong Kong's judicial system … Such irony, such self-contradiction and self-degradation, is truly lamentable.”
“To show his allegiance to the governments and politicians of the UK and other related countries, Sumption has trampled on the dignity of the rule of law and insulted his fellow judges, which is a disgrace to the judiciary”
“Sumption's lack of truthfulness, integrity, and morality clearly demonstrates that he has willingly allowed himself to be "’politically hijacked’”
“[Sumption] is willingly acting as a tool for the political manipulation of the British government and other related countries' politicians and is willingly serving external forces in their interference in Hong Kong affairs. By destroying his own reputation and choosing to stand on the wrong side of history, he is destined to face endless regret”
The Chinese original (https://t.co/2lm96xCLuH) is even longer and contains random references to Chinese classics, endless repeats of HK government statements and the like. But it also has the additional line of accusing Sumption of “succumbing to evil and selling his soul”.
That China accuses Sumption of all people of colluding with the British government in seeking to harm HK is beyond ridiculous. He has a long track record of disagreements and run-ins with successive British governments over all manner of issues.
But message that is already being sent by China to the remaining foreign judges is clear. WE EXPECT YOU TO STAY. BUT IF YOU GO, WE WILL BE MERCIFUL AND LET YOU OFF IF YOU GO QUIETLY AND SAY NICE THINGS ABOUT US ON YOUR WAY OUT. BUT IF YOU ACTUALLY TRY AND EXPLAIN YOUR CONCERNS TO THE WORLD, WE WILL NOT HESITATE TO GO AFTER YOU USING THREATENING LANGUAGE.
I hope those foreign HKCFA judges who are staying on know that this is not just some rhetorical flourish from the Chinese state - they have now all been threatened to keep quiet. Do not take the “destined to face endless regret” sting in the tail lightly.
@starniiite Not sure when this movie was made but this Zoe Saldana is more like someone in her 20's than that Zoe in 'From Scratch'.
Zoe in 'From Scratch' looks like some 50 year old cougar, when viewers are supposed to believe that she's a 22 year old. Why can't they cast someone younger?
@effoff1988 It bothers me a lot that the woman (Amy) who looks almost 50 plays a college graduate and then start having a relationship with a man who looks he's in his late 20's. And how does the lady who's got less wrinkle than Amy gets to play her mom? Something wrong with casting.
@johnfredz Why do they get a 50 year old actress to act a college graduate, which is not at all convincing to me. The word 'cougar' kept flashing in my head whenever that woman kisses a younger man. Other than that the story is just beautiful.

@JEC1967@scobie I guess Samantha Markle was also paid then, as in an interview with The Sun, Samantha called her half-sister Meghan a "shallow social climber" whose behavior was not "befitting of a royal family member".
‘If the Duke and Duchess of Sussex hate this country so much, they should either be giving up their titles or we should be helping them to do that.’
Tory MP Bob Seely reveals he is preparing a bill that would see Meghan Markle and Prince Harry stripped of their royal titles.
@sussextimeline Oh I see now.. so Meghan is mad that with all the effort she's made to make herself look more white (nose jobsss, hair straightening, etc) ... she still feels that people do not treat her like a white person! So she's not happy? Is that it? 🤔
