U.S. corn acres land above expectations and nearly equal with the March figure. Soybean plantings rise as expected from March, but wheat acres fall well below expectations.
🌾2026 U.S. wheat plantings land below all trade estimates, maintaining its title as the smallest wheat area since records began in 1919.
Spring wheat plantings will be the smallest in 56 years. Winter wheat acres come in below all estimates at a six-year low.
🇺🇸U.S. corn, soybean and wheat ending stocks in 2026/27 are all set to decline from the prior year. Wheat stocks came in well below expectations because of a shockingly small winter wheat crop.

🇺🇸70% of U.S. winter wheat areas are now in a drought, tying 2022's record for the week. That's also the highest level of drought coverage across winter wheat areas for any week since December 2022.
The TX/OK panhandle region worsened this week, and the forecast isn't generous.
🇺🇸U.S. winter wheat conditions were unchanged on the week at 30% good/exc. Corn and soybean planting remain ahead of both average and what analysts expected.
🇺🇸U.S. soybean planting is on a record fast pace as farmers prefer to plant beans earlier. Most states are many percentage points ahead of average (except Iowa, which has been wet).
But wet weather/early bean planting haven't held back corn planting, which is also ahead of avg.
Ukrainian mathematician Maryna Viazovska solved one of the most enduring puzzles in mathematics, a question that had challenged scholars for more than four centuries. Even giants such as Johannes Kepler and Isaac Newton had grappled with it without success.
Although we inhabit a three-dimensional world, Viazovska resolved the problem in eight-dimensional space, a realm so abstract that it defies ordinary intuition.
Born in Kyiv, she received her early education at Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv before pursuing advanced studies and research positions in Germany, including work in Bonn and Berlin. By the age of thirty-three she had been appointed a professor at the École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne in Switzerland.
The problem she addressed concerns the densest possible arrangement of identical spheres in space. Kepler first posed the question formally in 1611, wondering how spheres could be packed most efficiently. Solutions were eventually found for dimensions one, two, and three, but higher dimensions remained open.
In eight dimensions, Viazovska demonstrated that the optimal packing is achieved by the remarkable E8 lattice, a highly symmetric mathematical structure. What stands out is the elegance and brevity of her proof, which she presented in a concise paper of just over twenty pages, in contrast to the far lengthier and more computationally intensive arguments used in lower dimensions.
In 2022 Viazovska received the Fields Medal, the highest honor in mathematics, becoming only the second woman in history to win it. Her breakthrough also paved the way for the solution in twenty-four dimensions through collaboration with other mathematicians.
Today Maryna Viazovska continues her research as a full professor and Chair of Number Theory at the École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne.
She actively supports the Ukrainian mathematical community and stands as a source of inspiration and national pride for Ukraine through her extraordinary accomplishments.

US HRW wheat planted-acre-weighted precipitation is running near 56% of normal for the period ending April 25, 2026.
For the 90-day window ending April 25, HRW wheat regions show a planted-acre-weighted precipitation deficit of 1.75 inches, with total precipitation of 2.28 inches.
The dryness is concentrated across the core HRW planted-acre regions, making the spatial distribution important when assessing crop risk.
The key question from here is whether upcoming precipitation can meaningfully improve conditions before crop development advances further.

Another warning sign for the new US winter #wheat crop.
The share of winter wheat in drought rose by 2 percentage points and now stands at 70%. That matches the 2022 record high.
That year, US winter wheat yield fell to 47 bu/ac (3.2 mt/ha), the lowest in the past decade.
