🇫🇮 Henri Toivonen and 🇺🇸 Sergio Cresto - Lancia Delta S4

SS18 Corte - Taverna

On May 2, 1986, during the 18th stage of the rally (Corte–Taverna), Henri Toivonen and Sergio Cresto in their Lancia Delta S4 entered a tight left-hand corner with no guardrail. The car plunged down a steep ravine and crashed onto its roof.

The impact caused the fuel tank—which was unprotected beneath the seats—to rupture. The car exploded into flames almost instantly. Due to the remote location and the intensity of the fire, marshals and spectators were unable to reach the crew. Both Toivonen and Cresto died at the scene.

It was exactly a year after Lancia and the WRC lost Attilio Bettega in the same event.

Sergio Cresto had been Attilio Bettega co-driver as well before 1985.

Many believe the crew would have been World Champions in 1986 but unfortunately we never found out.
