So, @IndianExpress / @DaminiNath / @RitikaChopra__ are backtracking after realising that they messed up with their hack job and essentially shot themselves in the foot.

Here's what they're not telling you :

~ On July 28, 2026, an order removed Deputy Election Commissioner Sanjay Kumar from supervising the Director General (IT) and the IT/Grievances (PGRS) division.

~ On July 29, 2026, Election Commissioners Sukhbir Singh Sandhu and Vivek Joshi each wrote separately to Cabinet Secretary, against the removal.

~ On July 30, 2026, Sandhu and Joshi jointly set aside July 28 order, stating it was made "without any reason and justification". They directed that the previous work allocation continue until the Commission reached consensus on any change.

~ So, the two Election Commissioners acted together to revoke an administrative order, using the majority provision 2-0.

~ This shows that the Election Commission of India remains a functional, independent body in which two Election Commissioners can override an administrative change.

~ The fact that the Cabinet Secretary neither intervened nor responded to the letters suggests that the government did not interfere in the ECI’s internal affairs.

~ It also shows that the two Election Commissioners had the means to act against any unilateral move by CEC Gyanesh Kumar all along, if any.

~ So, the fact is that the two Election Commissioners never tried to implement their opinions on any other matters, by acting together.

~ This suggests the reality that most of the decisions were taken with full cognizance and consensus, despite any difference of opinion before or after that.

~ Also, the changes in Form 6 actually helps the new voters for a hassle-free enumeration, and not impede it.

~ The Election Commissioners' dissent wasn't directed at the intention behind including additional questionnaire. Their objection was that the necessary legislative due diligence had not been followed while updating the questionnaire.

It is time for @IndianExpress to apologise for the hack job carried out under its brand and to counsel the journos involved to stop reliving the old Emergency-era glory days and chasing clout.

There’s an interesting story about what happened after this article was published.

Dhanya and Chitra, both messaged me separately, telling me that their reporter had cancer and the morning they wrote this copy, they had chemo. The reporter wrote the “real name” in the copy. The editor, who was also unwell, changed without “thinking much” since the editor was also unwell.

Both of them asked me, “imagine how she feels now. She has cancer”.

I asked then how cancer had anything to do with giving a Hindu name to a Muslim rapist - no answer. Just attempts to guilt trip.
