HUSBAND: "Refining. Turning the oil into gasoline. That's the bottleneck. And get this - we haven't built a major new refinery in this country since 1977."

WIFE: "Nineteen seventy-SEVEN? I was in high school!"

HUSBAND: "Not one. And we keep shutting down the ones we've got. California alone is closing about eighteen percent of its refineries!"

WIFE: "Who shuts down a refinery when gas costs this much?!"

HUSBAND: "The Democrats. They spent fifty years regulating them to death - permits, lawsuits, fees, and a promise to ban gas cars. Who's going to spend a billion dollars building something Washington swears it's going to outlaw?"

WIFE: "So it was never really about Iran."

HUSBAND: "Iran nudges the barrel a little. But the real story? We've got more oil than any country on Earth and we STILL import six million barrels a day, because we can't refine our own."

WIFE: "That is absolutely insane."

HUSBAND: "Here's the good news. Trump just broke ground on the first new refinery in almost fifty years, down in Texas."

WIFE: "So I've been blaming Trump and HE is the only one actually fixing it?"

The Conservative Party of Canada has launched a campaign encouraging Albertans to stay in Canada.

It is worth being honest about what is going on here.

Alberta is the Conservative base.

Most of the party's safest seats are in this province. If Alberta leaves, the CPC loses its path to government. That is not an attack. It is just the math, and it explains why this campaign exists now.

Albertans should ask a different question. Not whether the CPC wants us to stay, but whether staying actually fixes anything.

The Conservatives governed Canada for nine years, four of them with a majority. They are good people who wanted to help Alberta. But look at the record.

Senate reform did not happen.

Equalization did not change.

Alberta's voice in Ottawa did not grow.

That was not a failure of effort. It was a failure of the system.

Real Senate reform requires a constitutional amendment.

So does ending equalization.

So does any permanent change to how Ottawa treats Alberta.

An amendment needs seven provinces representing half the population. The provinces that receive equalization hold enough votes to block it.

That means the provinces receiving Alberta's money would have to agree to stop receiving it.

That is not going to happen. Not under a Conservative government. Not under any government.

So the choice in front of Albertans is not Conservative or Liberal. It is whether we keep asking a system that cannot say yes, or build one that can.

Independence is the only path that does not depend on Ottawa's permission.

That is not about being against Canada. It is about Albertans finally being able to solve Albertan problems.

Pat Laliberté - La hache vient de tomber au Témiscamingue.

La multinationale américaine Rayonier Advanced Materials (RYAM) a annoncé la fermeture temporaire, pour une durée totalement indéterminée, de son complexe industriel à Témiscaming, carton et pâte compris.

Entre 400 et 425 travailleurs se retrouvent sur le carreau dès le 15 septembre, la différence vient de Radio-Canada qui en annonce moins que le Journal de Montréal.

Pour la région, c’est un coup d’assommoir.

On parle d’un complexe mythique, né avec la Riordon Pulp and Paper à la fin des années 1910, racheté par la CIP en 1925, puis relancé par les travailleurs et Frank Dottori sous Tembec en 1973.

Un fleuron bâti ici, sauvé ici.

Aujourd’hui, le joyau appartient à des intérêts américains.

RYAM ne s’en cache pas, cette pause forcée, c’est la facture directe des tarifs de 50 % de l’administration Trump.

Ça, c’est pas une « conjoncture ».

C’est ce qui arrive quand un gouvernement joue au brave devant les caméras en Europe et en Ontario, fait la leçon, nargue et quitte la table avec notre plus grand partenaire, puis s’étonne que le plafond nous tombe sur la tête.

Près de 16 % du PIB canadien et plus de 2,5 millions d’emplois dépendent de ce qu’on vend aux États-Unis.

Dans l’auto, trois jobs manufacturières sur quatre tiennent à la demande américaine. Et les décisions de production, elles se prennent encore à Detroit, Chicago ou Jacksonville. Pas à Témiscaming.

Aux États-Unis, une usine canadienne se fond dans un marché dix fois plus grand.

Ici, une filiale américaine, c’est souvent le poumon exclusif d’une ville. Un décret tarifaire de 50 %, et les cheminées s’éteignent.

Washington, lui, y verra juste une note de bas de page.

C’est pour ça que menacer de « punir » les États-Unis est un bluff coûteux : on se blesse d’abord soi-même, et ce sont les régions qui paient.

Eux, d’un trait de plume sur un décret douanier, ils éteignent une ville entière au Québec et mettent des centaines de familles sur le carreau.

C’est ça, la vraie photo.

Le Canada est en position de faiblesse dans cette guerre commerciale. À Ottawa, on fait comme si le patriotisme de tribune remplaçait un rapport de force.

On pète plus haut que le trou, et ce sont les régions qui se font ramasser.

Témiscaming est l’un des premiers gros morceaux à tomber. Soyez certains que ce ne sera pas le dernier.

Pendant combien de temps Mark Carney et le fédéral vont-ils se garder le coude bien haut pendant que nos PME, nos régions et nos travailleurs se font rentrer dedans ?

Ils vont faire autre chose que de garocher des chèques de sauve-qui-peut et du chômage ?

Parce que leur réflexe, une fois l’usine fermée, se résume à ça : « Soyez donc pas inquiets, on va vous envoyer un chèque pour vous garder sur le respirateur. »

Des soins de confort. Rien de plus.

Il est grand temps de lâcher l’orgueil mal placé, de retourner à la table et d’obtenir des ententes concrètes.

Parce qu’en attendant, ce ne sont pas les politiciens d’Ottawa qui payent la note. C’est les 425 gars et filles de Témiscaming qui rentrent chez eux sans savoir s’ils vont avoir une job le mois prochain.

3. ♦The Stupid French Language thing.  The French language stuff was an ancillary aspect where the Canadian Cultural Police were demanding that all U.S. streaming platforms (YouTube, Netflix etc.) must have search engines using the French language so Canadian users can search for stuff to watch using the French language. A ridiculous issue that was not part of the trade discussion, but Mark Carney saw political value in blowing up the issue.

This is really stupid, because when you buy your hardware (TV, Phone, Computer etc.) it asks you what language or country during set up. If you live in France, you put France. The operating system does the rest.

We don’t code search engines for French in FRANCE because the OS does it! But Canada was requiring U.S. tech companies (streaming services) to install search features in French [I guess so they can set up the OS in English but get some ancillary feature.]

It was a stupid “side paper” in the Intellectual Property sector of the trade discussion.

2. ♦U.S. tariffs on Canadian Semi Trucks.  Canada wanted tariffs on Big Rigs removed. The U.S. said no.

The reason is simple.  Big Rigs assembled/built in Canada are falling apart in the USA. Why? Because they are full of cheap Chinese component goods and parts that wear out quickly.  The U.S. wants two things on this issue. Either: (1) Make them in the USA, or (2) stop using cheap Chinese component parts. 

The parts that Canada are using are not even available in the USA because we tariff and reject them, so why should we accept them when Canada installs them? 

Either quit using Chinese parts (hence, the trade alignment against Chinese imports) or accept a tariff equal to the rate we would apply if the product was coming directly from China.
