I know Chelsea will probably pull someone out of somewhere, even if it means overpaying for one of these players or finding another option. But that's not even my main concern. My main concern is this: do you see how even smaller clubs can show confidence and assertiveness?

They can simply say:
“No. It's too late. We are not selling an important player and jeopardising our season.”

But not Chelsea.

We sell our best midfielder on the final day of the transfer window, apparently for a price that we had already placed a deadline on weeks ago. And we are already short of quality in midfield. We saw that against Brighton.

My Chelsea couldn't even say once:
“NO. WE ARE NOT SELLING ENZO FERNANDEZ.”

Do you think Adam Wharton wouldn't want to join Chelsea? Alex Scott? Manu Kone? Of course they might want the move.

But their clubs have their own ambitions, and they are putting those ambitions above a player's desire to leave at the very end of the window.

A club should also know when to say no.
