Melvin Van Peebles (1932 - 2021) was an actor, filmmaker, writer, and composer. After graduating from Ohio Wesleyan University in 1953 with a B.A. in literature he joined the Air Force, serving for three and a half years. His debut film was "The Story of a Three-Day Pass" in 1967 about a tryst between an off duty Black soldier and a European woman which influenced the French New Wave cinema movement.

He went on to direct the film "Watermelon Man" (1970) but "Sweet Sweetback’s Baadasssss Song" (1971) is his most famous work, known for its avant-garde style and significant influence on grassroots independent filmmaking and helped usher in the "Blaxploitation" cinema era.

His DIY approach to filmmaking and his pioneering role in Black cinema have left a lasting impact. His son, Mario Van Peebles, followed in his footsteps as a filmmaker and actor, even portraying his father in the biographical film "Baadasssss!" in 2003.

Van Peebles was not only a significant figure in African American culture but also a broader cultural hero, a transformative figure in American cinema known for his groundbreaking work as a filmmaker, writer, and performer, who broke through racial barriers and left a lasting legacy in the arts.

Today's Black American (Freedmen) inventor is Marie Van Brittan Brown. Marie Van Brittan Brown and her husband, Albert Brown, invented something now used in tens of millions of buildings today, the home security system.

Their invention had audio that allowed a person to speak with the person at their door, video so they could see who was at the door, a remote to unlock the door, and a button to call the police. It has been cited in 32 subsequent patents and is the basis for the many home security systems today from Ring to SimpliSafe and more. #BlackHistoryMonth.
