Yvette Cooper said the UK will discourage trade with illegal settlements on West Bank but said it is hard to enforce a ban and ministers need time to investigate etc.
Yet this has been an issue on Minister’s desks at least since the ICJ two years ago advised on the illegality of occupation of Palestinian Territories.
The necessary legal architecture exists to ban trade with Crimea and could be applied in the West Bank, MPs argue.
Labour took a beating in local elections over Gaza. Not sure the urgency of that political message struck home.
Kit Malthouse a Conservative MP also devastating on the sanctions being applied to settler groups. He said that “the current wave what she is calling sanctions are not actually sanctions but asset freezes. That means that unless the organisations or individuals targeted have assets in the UK, the measures will have no impact. In fact, the regime that she has chosen to bring them in under does not even include goods and services, so as we are all still free to sell those organisations or individuals bricks and mortar, corrugated iron or insurance, the measures are unlikely to have any impact whatsoever on what is going on in the West Bank”.
NEW: Polling of Labour Party members shows over 60% are dissatisfied with the UK Government’s response to Israel’s atrocities in the occupied Palestinian territory, and want the Government to take stronger action.
What an utterly revolting tweet. The way this man just labels anyone who tries to hold Israel to account for its crimes against Arabs as Jew haters demonstrates how little he cares about antisemitism and how much he cares about ensuring Israel can continue its genocide.
“In the whole written history of the strait, it has never been closed, ever,” said JPMorgan Chase analyst Natasha Kaneva. “To me, it was not just the worst-case scenario. It was an unthinkable scenario.”
One of the more fascinating minor figures in British politics today. Clearly some of the Nietzsche staring into the abyss stuff going on here. A man driven to the brink by graphs. Useful representative of how people changed on the right after Johnson failed/lockdowns/BLM in 2020. Reinvention from mild mannered academic - jettisoning sober empirical analysis for straightforward demagoguery - to a TV face from a late Ballard novel. Once screamed at me for “killing Roger Scruton” at Tory Party conference. (I didn’t do that, but never mind.) Goodwin always makes me think of Max Weber: “…ultimately there are only two kinds of deadly sins in the field of politics: lack of objectivity and - often but not always identical with it - irresponsibility. Vanity, the need personally to stand in the foreground as clearly as possible, strongly tempts the politician to commit one of both of these sins.” It’s not wise to underestimate someone like this, who is willing to be humiliated so starkly in the service of their ambition.
💔 Sudan - 1,000 days. The world's largest humanitarian crisis.
"The international community has failed. Failed to deliver meaningful political action. Failed to deliver a ceasefire. And failed the Sudanese people." - @Zia_Salik

This piece suggesting the UK may unblock arms export licences to Israel is let us say strange. Peter Kyle UK business secretary will surely know arms export licences were suspended for 2 reasons, Reason 1: Israel was not allowing ICRC access to Palestinian political prisoners. That remains true. Indeed Israel wants to make it easier to impose the death penalty on these prisoners. Reason 2. As an occupying power, Israel had a duty to supply aid for Gaza. In mid-December UK for. sect. Yvette Cooper said "nowhere near enough" aid was entering Gaza. Israel is also trying to stop UK NGOs delivering that aid. https://t.co/4WcH97To5E

The Archbishop of York has revealed he was 'intimidated' by Israeli militias during visit his to the Holy Land this year.
Most Reverend Stephen Cottrell said he was stopped at checkpoints, and militias told him he could not visit Palestinian families in the occupied West Bank.
Israeli interrogators used psychological and physical torture to break Faris' spirit, using doctored photos to convince him that they raped and killed his mother and sisters. Then, they suspended him in the air for a full week.

🌍 Today, we joined thousands from across the UK in Westminster for the #ActNowChangeForever Mass Lobby, demanding urgent action from MPs on climate and nature.
We’re already stepping up in our communities – now, we need real leadership that delivers for people and the planet!
Brutal settler-colonialism supported by UK govt, among others, which steadfastly refuses to sanction the genocidal, apartheid & illegally occupying state. Strength & solidarity to Masafer Yatta! Shame on @DavidLammy@Keir_Starmer
Is there anyone in charge of UK Middle East policy? Last week the UK suspended talks with Israel over a further free trade deal with foreign sect saying what Israel is doing in Gaza "is extremist, dangerous, repellent and monstrous". One week later the UK trade envoy acts as if it's business as usual. Fundamentally, not serious.

An aid blockade is an aid blockade. Annexation is annexation. War crimes are war crimes.
This weekend, Israel committed to the full occupation of Gaza - a breach of international law.
What is the justification for not escalating UK sanctions, and when will action follow words?
