Nevaeh Crain visited the emergency room three times over a span of 20 hours with severe symptoms, including a fever, nausea, and vomiting, which started on the day of her baby shower. Initially, she was diagnosed with strep throat at the first hospital, but her abdominal pain was not further investigated. On her second visit, she tested positive for sepsis, but was sent home because her six-month fetus still had a heartbeat, and under Texas' abortion ban, doctors could not intervene until fetal demise was confirmed. On her third visit, after more than two hours, an obstetrician insisted on two ultrasounds to confirm fetal demise before moving her to intensive care. By this time, her condition had deteriorated significantly; her blood pressure had dropped, and she was showing signs of severe sepsis with her organs failing. She died hours later.
