@SpeakerWelchIL@MeetThePress@kwelkernbc Rather than try and argue for or against the merits of either of their positions, nearly the very first thing you bring up is race. You should be embarrassed. Also, while I don’t always agree with Trump, the MSM is, indeed, overwhelmingly left and constantly out to get him.
@jonmhong @SonofLARGE I see what you’re saying now. Well, as Alex K. pointed out he was simply mentioning a hypothetical scenario that represents a logical extension of a practice you said makes sense to you but which, IMO, is indefensible. No disrespect intended on my part.
@jonmhong@SonofLARGE That’s honest and respectful. Please tell me how what I’ve said is dishonest and/or sarcastic? First, the case to provide a boost to minorities is not supported by data. Second, if we’re going to do it, it needs to be early in life (not in college/grad school admissions).
@Colonizingmaga@avidseries Multiple systems (e.g., AA, DEI, preferential admissions) have given underrepresented individuals a chance for MANY decades and they simply haven’t been able to close gaps. It’s an insulting practice to everyone, especially to those minorities who are able to compete on merit.
@SonofLARGE@jonmhong This, so far, is in the running for the best comment of the day. 😂
If the practice this person describes is, indeed, implemented at UCLA, I would fully expect them to be sued.
@KarenBassLA I think I’ve told you this before, but getting an endorsement from Maxine Waters could quite literally be the last thing I’d ever brag about.
@drterrysimpson I’m sure I’m missing something, but as a grad school professor who has sat in admissions meetings for decades, I can tell you this is what’s happened. And, by the way, trust me when I tell you, researchers can find what they want to find.
@drterrysimpson 3. Relaxed/altered standards to admit more URMs
4. People inevitably point out the illegality of such practices
5. Researchers break their backs to show that URMs produce better outcomes in the communities they represent
6. Arguments for “holistic” evaluations to boost URMs
@drterrysimpson In the end, what you’re saying is that the desire for representation should trump merit/quality (which is insulting to all involved). If we keep practicing race-based admissions, my guess is we’ll start to see more medical errors among those who were less qualified at admission.
@terrybythebay@SwipeWright I want to live in a color blind society too. I could, perhaps, be persuaded to set goals to increase representation PROVIDED that all other qualifications are equal. What’s happened, though, is people have insisted on representation despite MASSIVE differences in qualifications.
@aaronsibarium@sfmcguire79 When I hear stuff like this and realize the current context in many/most law schools, it makes me admire people like Amy Wax even more. Can you imagine being a minority voice on the front lines in a place like this, constantly facing cancellation? How miserable would that be?
@Spiritualtie@StateDept I agree, but regardless of the etiology of these “symptoms”, they still have to be addressed, and it is incumbent on each nation to address its own well being. I support us helping others as appropriate, but the answer is not to simply absorb others’ economic and social problems.
@JoyceCarolOates Admitting only A students isn’t terribly impressive given high school grade inflation. Also, it’s nearly impossible to argue there is no grade inflation when average SAT scores (a proxy for cognitive ability) have decreased for several years yet average GPAs have increased.
@jess_ann_pin@Ticcer@GadSaad No one on the mainstream right says women shouldn’t vote. Also, when certain variables are controlled (job title, industry, education, experience, hours worked, etc.), the gender pay gap virtually disappears (women make 99 cents on every $1 men make), so that’s not true either.
@michael_k_woods@avidseries Agreed. It’s highly likely that what Gaines said has actually occurred (assuming this guy’s intent tonight was to shoot Trump, which seems highly likely), whereas the notion that these shootings have been staged is full-blown conspiratorial nonsense. Apples and oranges.
@darren_stallcup Not sure how old you are, Darren, but time fighting it does play into it. I’m native to SoCal and have lived over 40 of my 55 yrs here. I love it, but there is a fatigue that sets in as the decades pile up. Some people can only hang in for so long before they have to tap out.
@katieporterca@SteveHiltonx Fine, then let’s get a reasonably compassionate system in place that differentiates between those who are making an adequate effort in life and those who aren’t, because that is not happening right now. At present, there is massive abuse of many of our social support systems.
@sfmcguire79 It’s hard to believe such behavior during an organized presentation only warrants a “warning”. It’s a microcosm of what we see in many parts of society, an inability to engage respectfully with others resulting in inappropriate behavior, and an environment that enables it.
