In November 1984, 17-year-old Lisa McVey was riding her bike home after a double shift at a donut shop in Tampa, Florida.

Out of nowhere, a man dragged her off the bike and forced her into his car.

He blindfolded Lisa, pressed a gun to her head and drove to his apartment. For the next 26 hours, he raped and tortured her.

The girl believed she was going to die. But she was determined that if she did, police would catch the man who killed her.

So she paid attention to everything. She peeked under her blindfold whenever she could, counted the steps up to his apartment and pressed her fingerprints onto every surface she could reach in his bathroom.

She also kept him talking and promised to be his girlfriend. She even made up a story that her father was seriously ill and depended on her.

Slowly, it worked. After 26 hours, he drove her back toward her grandmother's house and apologized. Then he told her “Tell your father he's the reason why I didn't kill you."

Every detail she had memorized, from his car to his apartment to the ATM he had stopped at, led police straight to him.

His name was Bobby Joe Long. That year, he killed at least 10 women in the Tampa area. He was arrested on November 16, 1984, and later sentenced to death.

Years later, Lisa joined the same sheriff's office that caught him and became a deputy who helps survivors of sexual violence.

In 2019, when Long was executed, she sat in the front row.

So... there was a "mass shooting" at Florida A&M. A fair number of people were shot. Fortunately, no one died. It's rapidly vanishing from the news, except for brief notes that a "15 year-old has been arrested".

Why is that?

Florida A&M is an HBC. The crowd at the event was black. The group that got in a fight is black. The "15 year old" is black. He went after his target with his Glock and its machine-gun conversion, spraying bullets all over the place.

Doesn't fit the narrative. The story is dead.

This is about more than immigration or politics. It is about what happens when ideology and group identity take precedence over individual lives, when some are protected and accommodated while others are left to bear the consequences.

I cannot bring Katie back. But I can refuse to let her death become another statistic, another political talking point, or another tragedy that those in power expect us to accept and forget.

Her name was Katie. She was 20 years old. And she was never expendable.

My wife has kept the same cassette tape for 30 years.

In 1994, she was 13 and the quietest girl in her junior high. She never spoke in class. Not once.

That year, an American teacher came to her school. Ms. Carter. From Kentucky.

Our town had never seen anyone from Kentucky. Our town had barely seen anyone from Osaka.

Ms. Carter noticed the girl who never spoke.

She didn't call on her. She didn't make her stand up.
