@CityOfVictoria planners deliberately, knowingly did this when they pushed through the Richardson bike lane route. #YYJ choked off an arterial car route, so the consequences were that traffic spills over on to residential streets creating arterials on quiet side streets.
In order to remedy the undue burden placed on Quamichan from the closure of Richardson, the city has decided to now close Quamichan, expect Runnymede to now feel the brunt.
@lrbincanada We've lived on Richardson for over forty years. People who ride bikes seem to have done so quite successfully for that time without all the unnecessary changes. We're now forced to drive up neighbouring small streets to get to our house. Why ruin a main thoroughfare?
@ejamesYYJ @wdbowkett@lrbincanada Also, I used to ride my bike to work down Richardson in the eighties and nineties. It was fine. There were lots of cyclists back then too. I wonder how many new cyclists have been encouraged by the bike lanes. It doesn’t feel very different to me - completely non scientific.
@ChillAsHellYYJ @baronjutter @ejamesYYJ @wdbowkett@lrbincanada As nice as that sounds, hardy justification for blocking an important, major thoroughfare. Doesn’t make sense to me at all. There are so many nice places to ride in the area. Richardson should become a thoroughfare again.
@Jingadingding @ejamesYYJ @lrbincanada I was one of them! When I lived on Cook and later in James Bay in the 90s, Richardson was my regular route to work and to UVic. Busy and safe. 🚴♀️ When unquantifiable metrics are put in place it’s easy to manipulate the data. Was that intentional or accidental in this case? /s
@ejamesYYJ @marrkstep@wdbowkett@lrbincanada Are there counts for vehicle traffic on Richardson before/after? I’d like to know how much traffic has been displaced for a very small gain in bike traffic. Also, do we have bike numbers from before? Have they even increased? I wonder…
@ejamesYYJ @marrkstep@wdbowkett@lrbincanada One of the reasons often given for building bike lanes is to encourage cycling and reduce CO2, but by blocking Richardson, people are only forced to drive further than they would have, which of course, increases CO2.
Richardson bikeway makes no sense at all and has screwed up numerous other streets in the area. Quamichan for instance. 5 huge speed bumps 3??crosswalks??, ITS 600m LONG! it goes to one lane around a blind corner and it has a much higher volume of traffic than before.
@CharlesBodi@RethinkRichard2 More unintended consequences causing Richardson and blocking all those other roads around there. Wait till they do OB Ave!
Remember Leila? The girl who was struck by a negligent distracted driver in Gordon Head? Leila Bui's mom would like to win Leila a bike - I've voted for her, and think it would be great for Leila to be able to bike with her family again. https://t.co/RB4t62nayk
Want to know what is happening on the streets & in our parks in Victoria? This @timescolonist article sums it up nicely. Collectively,we are failing our most vulnerable & marginalized people & @vicpdcanada are put in a no-win situation. I refuse to accept this as the ‘new normal’

@JeremyCVictoria Sadly the noise & exhaust from the increased traffic on Fairfield due to the Richardson St closure is GROSS. So it doesn't work for everyone. And I enjoy the protected bike lanes. Got a solution for those of us dealing with this?
