I dislike tofu when itโs used as a meat substitute, but I love it when itโs used as a rice substitute. For example in noodle stir fry, tofu takes the place of chicken, but in dofunao itโs a blank canvas for other flavors
The writing system looks like Vietnamese to me. Also, do they really need to have so many hyphens everywhere? Interesting how โTai oan langโ remains comprehensible
Peh-oe-ji (a common system of romanisation for Hokkien, widely spoken in Taiwan and even known as 'Taiwanese" there) has been adopted as an actual writing standard of a small part of the Taiwanese Nationalist Internet, which is fascinating to me.
Do you love Japanese consumerism but donโt want to live in Japan? Consider Hong Kong. You can get onigiri, canned coffee, and strong zero every day, buy goods at matsukiyo or Muji, and end the day with ramen or sushi.
But we donโt have famichiki. Or salad.
Chinese Americans really should move to Hong Kong because of:
(1) English support
(2) clean and convenient city
(3) 50% of ABCs already speak Cantonese anyway
(4) they love Japan

Anglo Americans: Yeah Iโm gonna yolo move to Japan, a foreign country. No I donโt have a plan and no i donโt know what the future holds.
Chinese Americans: No I would never live in China!! I need to have three job offers and five spreadsheets confirmed before making the move!!
For many itโs a โfoot in the doorโ and easy visa to come to Japan, the dream land of strong zero, famichiki, and anime.
For a young single person, itโs also not bad pay (equivalent to some entry level paying jobs Japanese people work) but the problem is that itโs also an easy job that one can get stuck doing for years with stagnant pay.
We all know the stereotype: the burned out and broke and divorced ALT in his 50s crying in his beer at the HUB.
Donโt be that guy (or least if you are that guy, donโt be broke)
My advice for anyone coming to Japan to teach English: have a clear plan. Pay off your debt and student loans before coming to Japan. Make friends and have a good attitude. Learn some skills on the side, network, start a side hustle, invest your money in stocks, marry a rich cult leaderโs chubby daughter/ son, etc. Just donโt get stuck and become โthat guyโ
@seanluomdphd No, you canโt actually get fast, on-the-go Japanese consumerism in New York. Occasional sit-down restaurants is very different from the sheer density of it in Hong Kong
Whenever you see some crazy dissident who has schizo negative opinions about China you just know he is Chinese. The more you hate on China, the more you reveal your own Chinese-ness. In fact there is nothing more innate to modern Chinese people than hating on China.
Many First Gen diaspora are full of negativity towards Chinese Americans, unfortunately. A lot of the haters have terrible English and poor understanding of western customs, so they have to pearl clutch onto Chinese as itโs the only thing they have going for them
a subset of the anti-AI red guards are non-tech chinese or self hating diaspora who are dressing up their feelings as cultural gatekeeping. the self hatred runs deep - the original hater is a diaspora deep learning phd. what's up with that?

The Asian American food religion: where talking about smelly kimchi and momโs home-made egg rolls is valid, but authentic conversations on Confucianism and Eastern culture is completely prohibited. Crying in Costco
