I once went into a business with someone.

It was a gas plant.
The idea was mine. The skill was mine.
I brought 75% of the capital.

But because of my profession, I couldn’t be there full time so I gave a friend 25% and even taught him everything from scratch.

We agreed:
60% profit for me, 40% for him.

Business picked up fast.
Money was coming in.
He was grateful.

Then 6 months later… everything changed.

He told me:
Make it 50 50 or I’m leaving.

I refused it wasn’t fair.

Unknown to me, he had already set up his own place and was just looking for an excuse to leave.
Before he left, he collected all our customers contacts and sent them bulk messages.

Just like that, he tried to pull the ground from under me.

When we eventually broke up, he was properly paid off.
An agreement was signed by all parties including his surety.
Everything was done clean and documented.

One month later, he came back
asking to borrow my equipment.

People warned me not to help him
but I did anyway.

Big mistake.

This same person later told me he wouldn’t return them
claiming I didn’t settle him well when he left.

That was when I took action.

I reported him.
He was forced to return everything and was fined.
They told him clearly he had no case.

Later, I found out something deeper…

Another gas plant owner had been whispering to him
telling him he was being used
just to break us apart because we were strong competition.

Two months later…

His new business collapsed.

Mine didn’t.

Lesson?

Not everyone who smiles with you wants you to grow.
And sometimes, the person you teach will try to replace you.

Be kind but don’t be careless.

My friend has this habit of keeping nylons from things he buys instead of throwing them away.

Over time, they became plenty, so he decided to give them to a woman selling foodstuff on his street.

The woman was very happy and thanked him well.

Fast forward to about a month later…

He went to buy something small from her shop-maybe onion or maggi.

She didn’t put it in nylon.

My friend said he couldn’t carry it like that.

To his surprise, the woman replied:
I can't put this small thing in nylon,

He was shocked 🙄

Now I’m wondering…

Do people quickly forget favors?
Was he wrong to expect small consideration after helping her?
Or once kindness is given, should there be zero expectations attached?
