I also think the tech-centered parts of the music biz, and the tech biz certainly, vastly overestimate the number of artists who also want to be marketers. Many hold their nose and do it from necessity, but suffer on the mental health side because of it.
That’s not an attack on TikTok per se. it’s just acknowledging the number of conversations I’ve had with artists the past year who share this total exhaustion at the notion/need to be “content creators” constantly feeding platforms, and not just musicians.
The other artists voicing their support of these feelings—over on Instagram—really lend even more weight to this powerful post. I’ve proposed this hypothetical before: would the next Joni Mitchell even have a shot of being discovered if she didn’t want to make TikTok videos?
