“When the British abolished slavery, they compensated the slave owners with 20 million pounds in 1834,” notes @miaamormottley, prime minister of Barbados, as part of her case for reparations. “We have borne double jeopardy,” Mottley says, “blood, sweat, and tears to create the Industrial Revolution, and . . . now to be its victims on the front line of a climate crisis.”

Death really brings out the ugly in people. Love alone won’t prevent confusion, conflict or greed when you’re gone.
Get your affairs in order while you’re here. Put your wishes in writing and make them clear. Death has no respect for the day.
So yes, call for a sex offender registry but also demand that the government establish a Sexual Offences Court as well as invest in prevention & survivor support.
Most importantly, *WE* as society have to do better in supporting survivors & holding perpetrators accountable.
More importantly, it also requires society to have an honest reckoning with rape culture; the beliefs & practices through which we excuse perpetrators, scrutinise survivors, sexualise children, protect powerful or “respectable” abusers & treat sexual violence as a private matter.
What would be more beneficial is to apply pressure on the government to establish a Sexual Offences Court with urgency.
This court is something that the government has promised and discussed for years, yet remains unfulfilled.
Having a sexual offenders registry can be a useful safeguarding and accountability mechanism, and we should continue to call for it *but* it must be understood that a registry is *not*, by itself, a solution to sexual violence.
Which is why it is important to actually read the verdict and understand *how* the decision was reached. The sad reality is that sometimes VC’s lie and it is incredibly unfair and unjust to an accused because there is often no recourse for that even when found not guilty.
Micheal Ward, the BAFTA-winning British star of “Top Boy” and “Eddington,” has been found not guilty of rape and sexual assault in a London court:
• The 28-year-old was accused of raping a woman in the back of a car after meeting her outside a New Year’s party in London in January 2023
• Ward had denied two counts of rape, two counts of assault by penetration and one count of sexual assault
• The jury unanimously found him not guilty of all charges

A lot of people keep saying young people don’t know about the programs. It is one thing to say that programs need better advertising. It is another to act as though people do not have a responsibility to get up and make an effort to better themselves.
