@JoeBartram1 Zambian government did analysis of the benefits of trophy hunting and concluded 80% of the funds go to the hunting outfitters from rich countries. Almost nothing reaches the communities. It could be done better but it almost never is.

@ForestsMatter It is both. The growth of poor rural populations puts pressure on natural resources and drives a significant part of deforestation and forest degradation. Opposition to family planning is also embedded in models of infinite economic growth.
@RewildScotland@kierandodds@CarrifranWild Commercial forestry can also support rewilding by generating the funds required to manage the land. How much commercial forestry would be required to create a cost neutral business plan for rewilding? Maybe 20%.
@JMBecologist This is true when you limit your perspective to the specific land being managed. But to stem biodiversity loss we need to enable populations to connect across production landscapes. In many parts of the world there isn't the space for lots more wilderness.
To halt biodiversity losses will require mainstreaming of biodiversity conservation across sectors. This paper discusses how to achieve this in the forest sector - perhaps the most important. Full version with the country case studies is now out.
