Don't get me wrong, there's plenty of valid criticism of the current approach to academic papers, but getting rid of the paper entirely is about as "throwing out the baby with the bathwater" as you could possibly get.

Hear me out now. What if we did that in some kind of...document? We could even talk about our theory and how we went about solving the problem. Maybe even include some sample output from the benchmarking scripts and call it a...results...section

I believe that scientific papers are vestiges of the bygone era, especially in the fields of DS/ML/AI. IMHO, ML researchers should skip paper/arXiv altogether. Just publish the code and your data. Explain what code does. Publish a few benchmarking scripts. That’s it.
