Want Mbeumo through the middle, with Rash and Lacey on the flanks. Rash and Lacey gives better natural width and 1:1 ability. Mbeumo not a winger; better as striker. Cunha just not effective in most positions in this system.

Whatever the merits of the story, this makes me uncomfortable. JJ is 15. A child. His every move is now being briefed, reported and scrutinised while Europe’s biggest clubs circle. The adults around him should be protecting him from the circus, not feeding it.

Time will reveal whether this window was a success. We've tackled certain needs, though others remain largely unresolved. Using the same back 4 against Ipswich who lost 4-0 to Brentford 4 years ago, speaks for itself. Can't help feel that Carrick has been sold short by the club.

How and why are we here again?
The root cause =the Glazers. All else is symptomatic of their ownership. The debt, lack of direction and investment. The loss of focus on being a football club. The recruitment. INEOS. Every decision led to this. Until that changes, nothing changes.
