As a parent, I fear drugs kakhulu. No child is completely safe from drugs and from drug addiction. Drugs do not care about beauty, intelligence, upbringing, class or potential. That is why I never take kindly to people who make light of drug addiction or turn the suffering of addicts into entertainment. I have just come across a clip of Gontse Makhene. I remember her as the little girl many of us loved and adored. Strikingly beautiful , bright and full of love and warmth. Seeing her in this state is painful. Yet even through the struggle, you can still see traces of that beauty in her perfectly chiselled face. You can see the spsrk through her troubled eyes. More than that, you can still sense the gentleness and goodness she has carried since childhood . May the universe be kind to her. I’m not one to judge nor one to impose myself but I personally would have never agreed for her to be part of the cast of the reality show, not out of shame but for her dignity and that of her children To those battling addiction, may love, strength and peace find you. And to the parents, siblings and families carrying the heartbreak of watching someone they love disappear into drugs, please do not give up on them. Exhausted as you may be, your compassion, patience and assuring presence may still become part of the bridge they need back to life.
