People add to cart and leave. Owners can see it. Almost none can tell you why.
It watches the session, puts a $/month number on the leak, tests the fix. If it doesn't win it doesn't go live.
Here to learn from people who sell for a living!
Traffic but no sales is usually a store leaking in 10 small places at once.
None of them look broken on their own, which is exactly the problem.
The store just quietly underperforms.
So you blame the product, kill it, test a new one, and carry the same 10 leaks straight into the next store.
That's how people stay stuck for months.
So before you judge the product, go through the store properly:
Above the fold:
Can someone see the product, the price, the main benefit and the add to cart without scrolling, and is your headline a benefit or just the product name.
Message match:
Does the page open with the same promise the ad made. If the ad talks about one thing and the page opens on another, you broke the spell before they read a word.
Trust:
Reviews that are real and specific rather than generic, a visible guarantee, and shipping and returns made clear before checkout instead of buried in a tab.
Mobile:
Is the add to cart reachable at every scroll position, is the price visible in the sticky bar, and can they pick a variant without extra steps.
Copy:
Are you selling the result or just listing features. Find the section where you lose the reader and rewrite that one first.
Objections:
Write down the 5 biggest doubts someone has about your product, then check how many your page actually answers. Usually it's 1 or 2.
The offer:
Is it genuinely compelling next to competitors, or are you displaying a price with nothing built around it.
Friction:
Every popup, every extra step, every delay sitting between wanting it and buying it.
Checkout:
How many fields, how many clicks, and whether anything at the final step makes them hesitate.
Once you've got the list, fix them in order of what actually costs you money.
The cosmetic stuff feels productive and moves nothing. Your first 2 or 3 fixes usually hold most of the money.
And change one thing at a time.
Change 5 at once and you'll never know which one moved the number.
Now the uncomfortable part:
Some of the products you already killed were fine.
The store was losing the sale before the product ever got a fair test.
Questions to ask before hiring a "CRO" agency:
1. How do you diagnose what to test first?
2. How many variables do you test per run?
3. What's your process for deciding when a test is conclusive?
4. Can you show me a test that FAILED and what you learned?
If they can't answer all four, it's redesign.
Our search bar test lifted conversion 2.97%.
The result wasn't significant. We shipped anyway.
Tiny Rituals has a big catalog and search was tucked inside the hamburger menu, which is how most Shopify themes come. We pulled it out and put a persistent bar under the header.
Conversion came back at +2.97% and revenue per visitor at +5.54%, but the confidence intervals on both crossed zero, so the honest read is that we can't tell whether the change did anything.
We're rebuilding search for them regardless, and there's no point rebuilding something people can't find, so the bar was going in either way. What I wanted out of the test was whether making search prominent would cost us conversions, and it doesn't look like it did.
The query log is worth more to me than the lift was. On a catalog that size we're guessing at what people want, and every search someone types is them saying it directly.
I'd want significance on anything I couldn't undo cheaply. Pricing, checkout, shipping thresholds. This was a theme change I could revert in five minutes, and at a 0.36% conversion rate the test was never going to resolve in a window I'd be willing to wait out.
The point is, sometimes a test is just part of a larger strategy that you need to keep pushing forward. Don't neutral or directional tests are OK, as long as they fit into the puzzle. CRO is not an exact science!

@alex_momeni Agreed! the failed-test point will filter out majority on its own.. Any CRO Agents who's actually run tests has a graveyard...the ones who only show winners are showing you their portfolio and not their process.
@erikberny_ecom Hey Erik, 0.5% is rarely one problem. Q: are people not adding to cart or bailing at checkout? Different leaks, different fixes. I built https://t.co/xm1HDsQJ8y to find it automatically. Happy to your store through it for FREE pilot to prove results / help us validate our product
@bayodigitals Farfetch shipping - delivery fees vary by item size, weight AND destination! Disliked that it was going to be another 10% of the item purchase for shipping costs = Abandoned!
I built the thing I wanted in the chair: a small pixel, every session valued, a theme fix drafted, nothing live until the split wins.
If you already have the recordings and still can't name the $ leak, start here — https://t.co/QXG1OnRYt5
A $5–8k/mo CRO retainer is the same movie with better slides.
You get a deck of 40 hypotheses.
You needed one leak, in dollars, and a test that is allowed to lose.
If the store is under ~40k sessions/month, most of those tests never finish. You paid for meetings.
