Franz Beckenbauer has passed. This is long but you’ll see why.

Lucky to have spent time with him at a charity event 18 years ago where I had done a comedy set. He came over to say he that appreciated my “I’m the only Iranian comedian in the world, which is technically 3 more than Germany” joke.

I wasn’t sure if he was being serious so asked if it was offensive to him and he said “not at all.” I asked why. He said “because I am NOT German. I am Bavarian.” I asked what’s the difference, he said “big difference. I have a soul.” When I laughed he suddenly went all mock mechanical and Teutonic “Ya, I am zo funny. You vant I write jokes for you?” and then proceeded to tell stories of Germans who thought they were funny but who were, in his opinion “less funny than Geoff Hurst goal that never crossed the line. Imagine!”

To win everything in a football you have to be sharp. And funny, obviously.
