@London_NERC_DTP PhD graduate, studied ecoacoustic monitoring/analysis @RoyalHolloway. Into imaging & audio tech & anything environmental. Opinions my own etc.
Four years ago, 261 contributors in 35 countries collected soundscape recordings to monitor local acoustic changes in urban areas during Covid. Very happy to announce our publication in Nature Scientific Data this week: https://t.co/U6XE4xVQAS
Congrats to all #SilentCities team!
@ChrisGPackham What a messed up world when we have people who know absolutely nothing about nature, ecology and the environment making key decisions on these matters. So if you can't see it, isn't not important? Hmm severe case of white-idiot syndrome.
@abr_eco@alex_a_bush@TomAugust85@ecoacou_ollie Thanks @abr_eco! Found some interesting results with potential implications for use of acoustic indices; lower ACI values for dawn chorus recordings, non-linear relationship between NDSI & bird species richness, & effect of distance on index values.

Lower Acoustic Complexity Index (ACI) values produced for high levels of bird activity at dawn chorus could be caused by the homogenisation of saturated soundscapes.
Normalised Difference Soundscape Index (NDSI) displayed a non-linear relationship with bird species richness.
Lower index values in sycamore & beech dominated plots, maybe due to differing phenologies, shows importance of long-term surveys.
Acoustic indices ability to distinguish between bird biophony & other soundscape elements, & effect of distance on index values were also assessed.
How it started: installing acoustic recorders in Hainich National Park on a very rainy day in 2017
vs
How it is going: new OA paper by @RichardDBeason on use of acoustic indices to study effects of tree diversity on bird species richness is out! 🌳🌲🎤🐦

@looksbirdy @BrentPease1 Have you tried asking here?

I think the IIE were quite involved in the SE project and you might get a response more easily from them.
Still time to get involved in the UK’s biggest ever investigation into household plastic waste by @GreenpeaceUK & @PlasticEveryday! Count the plastic you throw away for 1 week (May 16th – 22nd), sign up here: https://t.co/4u8o0zTTpA

Usually, people want to remove #wasp nests in their garden. Left mine alone & had lots of wonderful #hornethoverflies about this summer. Their larva live in wasp nests, eating up waste in return. Without wasp nests, no hornet hoverflies! ❤️ecology #lovewasps#givewaspsachance
Under the new DEFRA metric brambles, ragwort and thorny scrub indicate degraded land. Much of Knepp would barely register for biodiversity. Something wrong there. @NaturalEngland @KneppSafaris
