I mostly agree with this, however, $9.00 was a bit low. I 100% agree that the bill amount should NOT dictate the tip amount.

Server 1 serves a table of 3 for $125.00 with low cost meals and is expected to pay a 20% tip.

Server 2 serves a table of 3 who go all out, it’s a special occasion, orders the big ticket items, expensive drinks, and so on, and is expected to pay 20% of the total.

Here’s the problem. Servers 1 and 2 did the exact same amount of work. Served the same amount of plates and drinks, yet one is expected to pay over $100.00 just because the AMOUNT of the bill is higher. That’s just crazy thinking.

What’s sad is that server 1 probably provided a better overall service. Tip fair, but suggesting that 18% to 25% based on the total of the bill is EXPECTED is just crazy.

If that’s the case, servers should stop working at fast food places and low cost restaurants, and stick to working for high cost locations, such as steak houses. They will do the same work, but get paid more on tips.

Maybe $20.00 is a perfect tip for ANY amount over $100.00. If a person turns over 5 tables in an hours, that’s $100.00. I know a lot of people who rely on tips and they are killing it. They take up hundreds of dollars per night in just tips alone.

Don’t fall for the hype that they are struggling. Some do, but most do not. Stop working at Denny’s or Applebees and apply at Longhorn’s if you have the mindset that the higher the bill the more someone should pay.

Here is a great tip. Let’s say a project takes 3 weeks. Take 40% down to get the project started. The other 60% needs to be broken down into 3 equal weekly payments.

After the first week, you get another payment to “continue” working for the 2nd week. If no payment, there is no work. Everything stops if the payments stop. If you get paid, continue working that week. Continue each week until the project is complete.

Anyone who does a job like this without payment up front is taking on way too much risk.

F those people. They should be grateful for the $50.00.

Here is my take. It’s not always about the total amount that matters to me and here is why.

Example 1: You eat at Applebees and you pay 20% on a $100.00 receipt. You tip $20.00.

Example 2: You eat at a fancy steakhouse that costs you $250.00, so you may think to leave 20% or $50.00.

Here’s the issue. Both places gave you the exact same service, filled up the drinks the exact same number of times, and brought you the exact same number of plates.

One person didn’t work any harder or do anything more than the other person, yet because of the TOTAL at one of the locations was higher, one of them expects a higher tip.

$50 is an amazing tip so good for you.
